KDF Twitter Hacked Twice: Would You Consider a Job as a Professional Hacker?

By Florence Mukunya,

Recently, we run a article on top 10 most weird careers in the world that you’ve never heard of.  Well, one of the highlighted career may not be a mystery any more, as you may have heard of the hacking of Kenya Defence Force (KDF) twitter account which was hacked twice. The second time being shortly it was initially restored.

Some of the tweets from the hacker included

So much poverty in Africa while you are wasting money in guns and All of you who have stolen from Kenya, we are coming after you. Whether you are Kenyan or not. A theif is a theif. No matter your position.

We have heard of stories of people who got employed after being caught hacking account such as banks and they were turned into ‘good’ hackers as they were already familiar with the hacking business.

For example Facebook hired 21-year-old George “Geohot” Hotz, the famed PlayStation 3 hacker. His hacks of Apple iPhones, iPod Touches, and the PS3 served as resume fodder to his current employer.

Microsoft also hired Johnny Chung Lee he is a computer scientist who famously hacked a Nintendo Wiimote in 2008 using a few ballpoint pens and infrared lights. He was then hired by Microsoft to develop the Kinect. Google poached him to become a “rapid evaluator” on experimental applications.

With the digital era here with us we have seen many companies embracing the social media as they marketing strategy. Such companies need professional people to test on their security level and to also deal with the malicious hackers such as the KDF case, these people are known as certified ethical hackers, but what are the qualification and requirements?

According to my research these are the skills and abilities of a hacker.

1. Ability to write computer programmes
First and foremost a hacker should have the ability to write programmes in many programming languages especially for those working with web applications.

2. Proficiency on computer language
Professional hackers should also have Knowledge of assembly language for them to make a career out of it.

3. Updated on all operating systems
For one to succeed as an professional hacker they have to have knowledge of a variety of operating systems like Microsoft Windows, various versions of linux is critical.

4. Experience with networking devices
A professional hacker should have experience with various if not all network devices, including switches, routers and firewalls is also important.

5. Knowledge in soft wares
In addition to technical skills, an ethical hacker needs good software skills. The most important skill, however, is flexibility. When testing software and systems, ethical hackers never know what will come up, so the ability to be resourceful is very important.
