How Far is Too Desparate…Would You Bribe To Get a Job? Kenyans React

By Florence Mukunya,

The Kenyan job market has so many people seeking for jobs to eke a living but unfortunately as it is for now, there are no enough opportunities for everyone.

With that said, would you bribe a hiring manager in a certain company to get a job?

You know, picture yourslef in this situation where you feel you are fully qualified for a certain position but you don’t trust the system (short-listing process) enough and the only solution is to give this HR manager maybe 50K and the job is yours for the taking.

Mercy Kanyi a recent graduate with a Higher Diploma in Human Resources has been applying for jobs and she has not been lucky and the idea for bribing for a job has crossed her mind so often.

“I wouldn’t mind bribing someone for a job; I have been job searching for such a long time that I have no option left,” says Ms. Kanyi, who adds that she would even get a loan to pay for the bribe.

You will be shocked at how many people are open to bribing for a job; this does not exclude people who are already employed who feel that they need to get better jobs.

Charles Mutuma an IT assistant in with a well known media station feels that he has been working for a long time without promotion or pay raise. “I have been job searching and I haven’t been lucky yet.”

He confesses that, “I would bribe for a job anytime. If the hiring manager guaranteed me the offer, I would use part of my savings and pay for the bribe.”

He however adds that he would prefer making an arrangement on how to pay for the job with his first month’s pay rather than giving the money in advance.

And how much would you be willing to pay for a job?

Magdalene Njema, a recent sales graduate considers a third of the promised salary as what she would pay for a bribe.

Ms. Njema says that , “I have thought about it for a while now but it all depends on how much the employer is offering, I would not bribe for a low paying job, but jobs in place like UN, or NGOs. Then I would gladly give a bribe of a third of the salary.”

Some of the people do not take bribing easily, such is Joseph Kamanja, an accountant with a well know firm in Nairobi.

Mr. Kamanja feels that people who bribe are those without the required qualifications.

“I would not bribe for a job because I believe only people who are not qualified bribe to get jobs as they want to use shortcuts. Bribing also does not guarantee a permanent job because I believe the day the board reviews their employees, there is a chance that one gets fired for being unqualified,” explains Mr. Kamanja

He is also of the opinion that bribing is against the ethics and it is also against the Kenyan laws.

What’s your take, would you bribe a HR Manager  for a job?
