Mugo Kibati: Meet The Man Who Quit His First Job For Not Getting a Promotion

Meet the former Director-General of Kenya Vision’s 2030 Delivery Board, Mr. Mugo Kibati who is also the Founder of Miliki Ventures (a strategy execution firm). He is a man who managed to achieve several of his milestones at a very tender age than what is normally expected.

He was recently the CEO of East African Cables.

Mr. Kibati is an engineer by profession, but how did his education life begin?

In a previous interview, Mr. Kibati says that, “Earlier I attended Meta nursery school 1974 before I joined Valentines primary school in Mombasa. I was to join Mombasa primary but I was denied admission because I was too young.”

He adds that, “Instead of leaving me at home to attain the said age, my father took me to Valentines since they didn’t care about the age. Later I joined Mombasa primary where I spent 6 years between class 1 and class 6.”

He later joined Alliance High School from Form 1 to Form 6. After which he got admitted at Moi University where he graduated in 1991 with a degree in Electrical engineering.

Immediately after graduating, Mr. Kibati joined Bamburi Portland cement as an engineer but without experience he was put on probation and later got confirmed in the same company.

Mr. Kibati though quit the company after he failed to get a promotion while most of the people he had joined with had gotten promotions.

“Most of the people I joined with had moved on in their ranks but I was in the same position simply because of my age. I felt I needed to move on. I quit and got a green card the same year,” he says.

He travelled to USA Washington DC in June the same year he quit his job and enrolled for an MBA in International business finance at George Washington town University. Later, he did his Masters in Economics.

What are his greatest and memorable moments?
Mr. Kibati talks of his greatest moment as having worked with the Oklahoma Senator.

“I worked for Mr. James H. Inhofe Oklahoma senator. I was attached to his legislative office. In 1996 during the electioneering period, Osama shot down an American plane. I was tasked with the responsibility to call the pentagon to demand for an explanation on what action the Clinton administration was going to take on the aggression the people of the USA by Osama. Pentagon responded immediately,” he explains

What inspires Mr. Kibati to go to work every morning?
He says that his inspirations are long time which includes transforming this country for the better of the children.

He reveals that, “I do not have a career. Career is too narrow to be a life focus. Talk about having a life and that’s what I have. A live a deliberate and examined life. I think through the things I do and I question everything that comes my way. I am a trained engineer but I only worked for a few years as an engineer. Would you say I have failed in my career path?

He is also a man who believes in a simple life.  “I live a simple life, not because I don’t aspire but I try to live within my means. I avoid stressing myself with a life that is beyond my means.”

He also adds that, “Don’t just ape or follow unquestioningly to everything. Doing or not doing something should come from your personal conviction not what people tell you. Unexamined lives lead to such things as tribalism. Don’t just stick to a job because of the fear of losing an income. Follow your heart and make difficult decisions.”

Mr. Kibatis who says his greatest challenge is people says he wants to be remembered as a man who fought the good fight and as a man who was in the arena and also somebody who cared enough to do something.

Since his childhood, Mr. Kibati’s age seemed to hinder him from a lot of things, but he did not let it deter him.
