“I Got A Promotion But No One Is Training Me” HR Shares Advices

By Elizabeth Benu,

“I recently got promoted from an accountant to a business development officer. The lady coming to take my place as accountant got a week’s training from me to ensure smooth flow of business.  On the other hand I will be starting on the new position next week but no one has offered any training. The problem is that I am not sure if I can handle all the responsibilities outlined in the new job description. I have never seen anyone in this company get trained. Are companies obliged to give trainings to employees? Please help.” writes Agnes Muita in an email

Getting a promotion is one of the coveted things in career growth. Like Agnes some of us are not confident enough in our skills and you feel the need for training before you start on your new role. Nobody wishes to appear incompetent or make mistakes on the job. So what should you do?

Brenda Mideva, HR Officer at FEP group says that a person should be trained to suit the promotion

“Immediately on placement / promotion then an employee should be inducted to the new position and given the expectations of that position just any normal induction. However this is not for a promotion only but mainly for career advancement and after several trainings and with years of experience then the person is considered qualified to fit in the next position in line with his career path.

Ms. Mideva says that training will assist to make sure the person is able to deliver the expectations of the new role.

In such a case like this where there’s no training Ms. Mideva advices that , “Training can be conducted on the job and so after the promotion a series of vigorous trainings should be undertaken and mentorship for this person to perform the duties expected of the new position.”

Talking to your boss takes courage since you do not wish to appear incompetent.

Ms. Mideva states that the best way to talk to your boss is to make it formal through email or an official letter highlighting the key areas you feel challenged on and not able to perform then request for a meeting to discuss the way forward.

“Training plays a very critical role in ensuring one is armed with the right skills to handle both today’s challenges perfectly and tomorrow’s without any challenge,” Ms. Mideva confirms.

Mercy Makena, a HR Consultant at Virtual HR concludes by saying

“Getting a promotion depends on the position. If you feel the need for training, make a request on the areas you want training on and you will get it.”
