2 Tips To Help You Avoid Getting Stuck In A Dead End Job

By Florence Mukunya,
Susan Kanana feels stuck in her current job; she says that it feels like there is no room for her career growth.

“I have been working for three years as a cashier and I am at a point where I feel that my job has become monotonous. I don’t handle anything new which makes me bored, stressed and frustrated at work. Please help me”, she writes in an Email

“An ideal job is supposed to offer room for growth and advancement of skills; it should also offer an employee enough challenges to handle at work,” says Yvonne Otieno a HR Officer at Lutheran World Federation Dadaab

How do you tell that you are in a dead end job?

Ms Atieno says that, “If you keep handling the same kind of duties and no new challenges or extra responsibilities are handed to you then you are in a dead end job.”

She adds that, “The reasons you might not be getting handed over new responsibilities could be your poor performance so note that you could also be driving your job to a dead end.”

What are some for the excuses that keep employees stuck in such jobs?

“I have seen people get stuck in such jobs for reasons such as not having developed career wise, such people feel that if they start looking for other jobs they will not find one due to the completion,” Ms Atieno responds

She continues to say that, “I also think the situation with the Kenyan job market makes employees hold on to their jobs no matter how bad they could be because the probabilities of find a new job are low.”

Can holding on to such jobs damage your career?
“Holding on to such jobs makes an employee redundant and the organization might decide they don’t need you any more for you do not add any value which will mostly lead to the end of your career,” says Ms Atieno

What are some of the tips that could help you avoid getting stuck in a dead end job?

1. Develop a network
Ms Atieno advise that, “Networking with other professionals will greatly help when it comes to job search, it also keeps an employee updated on the latest career trends which helps beat competition when looking for jobs.”

2. Talk to your boss
“I would also advise talking to your boss and explaining to him that you want more assignment or responsibilities which will in return bring new challenges making your job more exciting,” she says

Ms Atieno has some advice for those feeling stuck in such jobs, she says that, “Join professional bodies for job opportunities and make sure that you update your work profile as some of these people may be looking to hire.”

Well, if you think that your job is headed for a dead end, act now. Even if it means going back to school so that you get to rise to a more exciting and challenging department, do it.
