Are You A Lazy Job Seeker? Tips on How To Change Your Career Direction

By Elizabeth Benu,
Are you committed to your job search? Do you tirelessly hunt for a job or are you the person who spends all day on social media admiring other people at work? Perhaps you do not even know if you fall in the category of lazy job seekers. If you do, challenge yourself to improve

Beth Wanjira, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services classifies lazy job seekers into three groups.

“There are those who are not so keen with their life. They still live in their parent’s house and they eat, sleep and dress well courtesy of their parents. They are too comfortable where they are to even look for a job,” she says

“The second category does not know how to job hunt. They only call to ask if a job has been found for them. Others do not want to read a job description; they are interested in the job title salary and application details,” she continues

“Lastly, is the kind who is just spoilt. They come from wealthy families and have a lot of money to inherit with provision of excessive material gifts. They do not see the need for finding employment,” adds Ms Wanjira.

Ms. Wanjira states that lazy job seekers lack motivation adding that they have nothing to look forward to since they have no responsibilities and are comfortable with where they are.

And how does being a lazy job seeker come across to employers? I ask

“If you cannot take simple instructions such as clicking on a link provided online to see the job description, do you think a hiring manager will be interested in you? This affects your chances of being considered for the position,” Ms Wanjira utters

“Secondly, nobody likes to work with people who take shortcuts. If you just want the application details without reading the job description what does that mean? No recruiter or supervisor wants to push, monitor or baby sit you. They do not want to watch everything that you do since you are not as aggressive as required,” she says

How can lazy job seekers improve?

Ms Wanjira is of the opinion that job seekers have a perception that they are needed so much.

“But what are you doing as a job seeker? A recruiter can’t many calls so what are you doing to increase your chances of being considered for a job. Remember everyone is looking for a job and recruiters go for an aggressive applicant,” she says

“I would advise them to start looking for a job aggressively. It all narrows down to you. If you want something for yourself, will you sit and wait for it to come or go out to look for it?,” she questions

“Ask yourself these three questions: Who do I want to be? What do I want to achieve in life? and Where do I want to be in the future? When you figure it out, start working on it and improve yourself. Once you identify your purpose you will improve your CV, cover letter as well as your body image and interview skills,” she concludes.

It all starts within you. As you set your targets you will find a purpose in life.
