“My Boss Asks Us To Re-Apply After Every 6 Months” HR Shares Advice

By Elizabeth Benu,

Julius Otieno has been working for a Pharmaceutical firm in Industrial Area for 2 and a half years and during this duration, his boss has been asking him and his colleagues to reapply for their positions.

In his email, Mr. Otieno explains that, “This is done in the name of the company restructuring. In the process, one of us loses the job and they are usually replaced with a new person.”

He adds that, “My problem is that no one has ever complained since we do have not signed contracts. The salary is good but I am scared that with this re applying I will lose my job soon. What should I do?”

Why do companies do this in the first place?

Beatrice Chuchu, Human Resource Personnel at Outrival HR, is of the opinion that a company may do this as a way of ‘getting rid off’ of employees without appearing like they are actually firing them.

Alison Doyle a career advisor adds that, “This can also happen when a company is downsizing. In this case, current employees will have to compete for one of the job openings which will be available.”

Like Mr. Otieno, a common reaction would be anger, frustration but how should an employee handle this situation?

Ms. Chuchu advices employees to first look at how the organization is fairing.

“There might be things that are not doing well within the company and that could be the reason why managemnet keeps asking people to re-apply after every 6 months,” Ms. Chuchu adds.

She also adds that after analyzing the organization, an employee should think of the best way to approach the issue.

Ms Chuchu cautions that, “It depends with your situation. If you do not have another job waiting, then re-apply.”

She states that such a situation is unstable and employees will never settle or grow in their careers.

“If you are worried and you do not know what’s next for you, look for another job while still there. It is good to think about your career and the direction it is headed before you take the next step,” concludes Ms. Chuchu.
