8 Reasons Why Your Boss Doesn’t Think You Are Worth A Raise

By Elizabeth Benu

Getting to earn a better salary as you progress in your work is something every employee looks forward to. But what could be the reasons behind you not getting a raise?

Nyawira Maingi, a Client Service Personnel at Corporate Staffing Services outlines 8 reasons why your boss does not think you deserve a raise.

1. The company’s budget cannot accommodate your salary raise

The company may be remodeling or planning on buying new equipment so having to give you a raise is the last thing on your bosses mind.

2. You are not professionally mature
If you are the employee always blaming under performance or mistakes on personal issues, this makes the boss not inclined to give you a raise.

Let it be that your boss knows very minimal of your personal life and that you differentiate that life from work life.

3. You do not call attention to your accomplishments.
This happens when someone else is getting praise for your accomplishments. Your boss will think you just sit there doing nothing. If you do anything good let your boss see it. For example if you have done your project copy the email to your boss and supervisor.

This is important for documentation and referral processes.

4. His expectations of you were high.
When you got hired the boss had expectations of you. If you perform lower than that he feels that you are not doing enough he will never think you deserve a raise. It is important to hold a conversation with your boss explaining your limits and remove the mindset he has of you.

5. Under performance
Employers want to see an employee who is performing. If you consecutively fail to meet set targets the boss will not see a need to give you the raise.

Sometimes it is understandable we do not hit the target but doing it consistently gives the boss the impression that you are an underperformer

6. You only do what is expected of you
Are you that employee who only does as required in the job description? That is the reason why your boss does not think you deserve a raise. It is always prudent and proactive for you to go above the company expectations of your job role.

For example come in early and leave late but do not just sit there and do nothing; give results.

7. You complain too much.
We admit that dissatisfaction in the workplace will sprout once in a while but don’t be the employee who is always complaining. The boss perceives you as someone who always sees the negative and nothing positive. Complain and give solutions so as to get that raise.

8. You do not seem to know your worth
This is where you are the ‘yes man’ when it comes to your salary. You are too comfortable with what you get. Even if you are in a position that should earn you 60K a 35K offer is enough for you. This gives the impression that you are not aggressive enough. If you do not appreciate your worth no one will.

Ms. Nyawira concludes by saying, “Work towards gaining your skills, being a performer and an exceptional employee for your boss to consider you for a raise.”
