Ciku Muiruri Shares Tips on Success, “You Will Eventually Earn Lots of Money.”

It’s that time of the year again when students all over Kenya prove their ‘worth’ through the KCSE & KCPE exams. Sure thing is, they ‘worked hard’ all 4 and 8 years for this moment….next step is to get a diploma, a degree, an MBA and maybe a PHD….but what’s the end game to all this working hard?

“If you work really hard in school, you’ll get a good job and earn lots of money,” writes Ciku Muiruri on her Friday Column -Zuqka.

“That is what they tell us from an early age. However, this is a much abbreviated version of reality,” writes Ciku.

In her own words, here are few tips to learn from the former radio presenter.

1. On what the ‘hard work’ really means….
Ciku writes it’s better to say this instead….“If you work really hard in school, you’ll get an entry level job, work for many years earning barely enough to get by.”

She shares the morbid part of it, “You will use credit cards get burnt and toss them. You will borrow money to buy furniture and a car. You will spend your money on booze and spend Easter and New Year at the coast, where you will never see the beach because of the rave…..”

2. On being careful with the direction your life is taking.
Ciku argues that if you are not careful with your life, you will get caught in a time warp. “Ever met a 40 year old behaving as if they are still 20?” she poses

She adds that if you are lucky, you will grow up and move on. “Eventually you will read books like Rich Dad Poor Dad that will make you rethink your life. You will get a side hustle. You will use your networks properly. You will work your way up and eventually earn lots of money,” she adds.

3. On Earning
Ciku is of the belief that if you really want to be successful, you must put in the hours…

“Whether you are a lawyer, an architect, doctor, whatever…to be successful you must put in the hours…..It’s a long, tedious road to success. That is reality. They do not tell you that when you are a child.”

She adds that, “The result is university graduates fresh from school wanting the big car, big house, and a big paycheck.

She shares an example of what it should be like…. “Here is a typical conversation in any workplace..What does so and so earn?” Ciku argues that this is not a practical query .

“Rather they should ask : When they were starting off like me, how much were they earning.”

The famous radio presenter pens off by adding that, “Yes, money will eventually come, but in an ironical twist. When it does, the things of youth are gone, along with your poverty. You have no real friends because networks are more important to maintain than friendships.”

What’s your take on these sentiments?
