“I Lied About Being Arrested By City Council Askaris,” Funny Reasons For Being Late At Work

It is not surprising that almost every employee has had some explaining to do for coming to work late.

From excuses such as traffic jam to oversleeping or having to take a child to school first, Kenyans never run out of creative ideas for coming to work late.

So what were the funniest excuses for coming to work late that you had to come up with?

“Mine was a genuine and a valid excuse but my boss thought it was funny,” say Jeff Okore, a veterinary officer at a private clinic in town

“As I was leaving for work I was forced to let in some Jehovah witnesses guys who decided visit me in the wee hours. I could not kick them out so I just let them preach to me hence being late.

My boss did not believe me and almost fired me for that,” he says.

“When it comes to showing up to work late, being honest with the boss will not work for you. I was forced to lie because it was the only chance to save my job,” says Stella Moraa, a secretary at a business firm in Mombasa.

“I told my boss that the Matatu I travelled with was the cause of my predicament. The makanga did not have enough change so I had to wait for him to look for some only to realize that he had made way with the only money I had! I was forced to call a friend who “sorted” me out and that is why I am late,” she recalls.

“My creative and funny excuse was I forgot to switch my alarm clock so it did not wake me up. Reason was because my phone was on silent mode and I couldn’t hear a thing!” says Naomi Wanjiru, a waiter at a local hotel.

“I lied about arrested by city council askaris because of alighting in the middle of a traffic jam and had to sleep in a police cell for a long time. Actually my boss bought the excuse.” Jared Nyakwara responds with a smile.

“I also remember telling my boss on one occasion that I could not find my clothes because I left them in the line to dry and someone stole them.”

It did not go so well with him as I was later served with a warning letter,” he recalls.

“I live along Jogoo road so I always have a creative and funny excuse of coming late,” says Lawrence Nyang, a gym instructor at a popular workout centre along Kilimani road.

“One time I lied about raining in some parts of town so I had to seek shelter, “he says.

Enough said. Being punctual at work is not going to cost you anything so observe punctuality.
