“Nation Media Group Gives Prestige To Its Staff,” Current Employee Opens Up

By Elizabeth Benu
Nation Media Group  is one of the coveted and successful media groups in Kenya with many job seekers hoping to get a vacancy with the esteemed company. But what’s the working environment like at the Kimathi Street based media house?

Career Point Kenya recently met with a current Studio Technical Operator working with NMG and this is her confession

How did you get the job?
I started out as an intern during my first year in campus then went back to college and after one year they called me back.

What was the interview process like?
We first had a written aptitude test where you pass and get shortlisted for the oral interview. There was a panel of three interviewers. The main challenge was to prove that I was up to task for the job which was technical in nature. There were two slots only for the job and I got one of them.

What kind of organization is NMG?
NMG gives prestige to its employees. It is technologically forward; this ensures its employees remain the most competitive in the market.

Tell us more about  NMG’s working environment?
NMG has a very good working environment. The production department, technical section, a lot of team work is involved to ensure that both NTV and QTV run smoothly. The nature of our job has therefore ensured there is a thriving team spirit.

The shift is also very friendly, after working for six days one is entitled to three days off duty.

Does NMG offer great career opportunities to its employees?
Yes it does. Most jobs are interconnected making it easier to develop and pursue any area one maybe interested in. All that is required is hard work and dedication. I came in as a Studio Technical Operator, currently am looking to become a Director. I have been shadowing during bulletins and can direct a few shows.

What don’t you like about  NMG?
In this job one must always be ready to be called to work during the off days and societal expectations of having a huge salary.

Would you recommend someone to work with the media house?
I would highly recommend NMG to anyone who is interested since it has advanced equipment and systems giving its employees an edge over the others in the market. The team work also creates a sense of belonging.

What is the salary range for your vacancy?
NMG is in the process of harmonizing salaries, so for now I will not mention on the range of salaries until the harmonization process is complete,

What does your day as a Studio Technical Operator entail?
I report to work at 6 a.m. I set up the studio ready for the morning show. When the show starts at 6:40 I do sound control. The show winds up at nine; if there are any more shows to be recorded we set up the studio. At one o’clock I do the vision mixing for the news bulletin. At two o’clock I handover to the next shift marking the end of my day at the office

Do you have any advice to the senior management of the company?
My advice would be to consult with the technical team whenever they want to introduce new equipment or make new technical changes in studio.

This would ensure the management makes informed decisions in regard to the technical aspect of production to ensure minimal challenges during operations.
