Would You Hire A Gor Mahia Football Fan? Kenyan Employers Speak Out

By Jane Okoth,

It is a football club that has of late made headlines and it is all for the wrong reasons.

Gor Mahia aka kogallo is not an ordinary football as one can judge considering the diehard fans that turn out in large numbers to support the team.

In a recent match in Machakos County, the club lost to one Sofapaka anger and frustrations among the fans causing massive destruction of property.

Career point spoke to some employers and businessmen and asked them if they would ever consider hiring an individual who is a kogallo fan.

“I will not only refuse to hire a Gor Mahia fan but also a football fanatic who has hooliganism tendencies,” says Steven Opondo, a Business Owner at a Hospitality industry.

“How will I know whether my business is at risk of being burned down and looted whenever he feels aggrieved?” he asks.

“In fact I would not even consider offering them any services at my premises because these people are always up to no good.

I term football in Kenya to be a criminal career and a total joke. I still don’t understand why we are we still playing football yet we continue to lag behind all African countries” he adds.

James Kavesa, also a businessman is of a totally different opinion.

“Generalizing the fact that all football fans are hooligans is just being too judgmental. I would hire a Gor Mahia fan but not a hooligan because there is a big difference,”

Stephen also adds that “As an employer when hiring you, the first thing I would consider is your reputation.

This means that a person who is famous for burning cars, looting and destroying property and also disturbing people’s peace because they lost a match would be out of my list,”

It does not matter to me whether you went to school or not because there are some virtues in life which are far much important than your degree or diploma.

A hooligan lacks discipline which is a skill that is considered by most employers,” he concludes.

Stephen says that “I would only recommend an individual for a job opening if I am completely confident that they will not end up doing something foolish or irresponsible.”

James on the other hand says that “I wouldn’t be too sure about failing to hire or recommend someone for a job simply because he is a Gor Mahia football fan.

As for me, as long as an individual can perform and help the company achieve its objective, then I don’t see the reason to turn him away.

He also asserts that “As a potential employer, it is common sense that you perform a background check on your employees”

However, I would hire a competent individual who has the right skills that match what I am looking for,” he concludes.

As a Kenyan employer or one who is aspiring to be in the near future , would you hire a Gor Mahia fan or a football fanatic and what are your thoughts on the issue?
