Dear Employers: “I Will Work For Free.” Job Seeker With a Degree Cries For Help

What counts as experience? Is it through formal employment or any working experience gained from working anywhere?

This job seeker recently got in touch with Career Point Kenya. She believes she has the experience and academic qualifications to land a job but no one wants to employ her. She is even willing to work for free.

“My name is Purity Mwendwa*; a confident and self- motivated individual with the commitment and flexibility to work within a changing work environment. I have vast experience in management, administration, trainings and ICT.

I am 23 years and on 5th December I will be graduating with a Degree in Business Management – Administration from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.

I have not gotten my dream job yet. I always have difficulties applying for jobs not because of the pay but because of the job description. I fear accepting job offers because they might limit my ambition, my employer may under utilize my skills and I do not want to settle for less.

I started working at my father’s Accounting Firm when I was 11 years old and I have worked every day of my life since then. When I see a call for Job Applications that require 10 years experience, deep down I know I am qualified but which employer is willing to consider my childhood and teenage years experience at the workplace?

My Career Objective is to be the best business administrator in the region by enhancing Communication, Public Relations and Information Technology through training, development and involvement within a corporate organization.

In the past, I have done consulting for organizations such as Eurokesia Leadership and Management Company, Bridge Partners, Environmental Rangers Programme, Informal Sector Workers Association, Strategic Management Firm and Deliverance Church.

I help come up with policy documents for organizations and aid in internal staffing and training. These organizations are my potential employers but when I request to be an employee, I always get the same feedback, “You are too big for this organization” or “We cannot afford you as our staff”.

My friend Beth always tells me, “Your brain and potential does not belong in Kenya, you belong in America where the real action takes place.” But I do not want to go to America; I want to be in Kenya where the real action can take place.

I keep telling myself. “Purity Mwendwa*. A Rising Star. A Ticking Time Bomb.”

I know I should be serving on board of directors of organizations, as an Ambassador or as a Director. I know I have a higher calling than what I am currently doing. I know I can make a difference one step at a time.

I need help. I need a job.

I do not mind working in the government, international organizations, start-up companies, private sector or non-government/profit organizations. I do not mind volunteering. I do not mind working in remote areas. I do not mind helping the underprivileged, the aged and children. I do not mind where I will start at, even if it is bottom low.

Dear employer, make a difference in my life.

Do we have any HR Managers/ employers who can respond to this young job seeker and thousands of others in the same dilemma?
