Revealed! 600 KenCall Centre Employees To Lose Jobs

By Jane Okoth,

It is one of the most popular call centers that boast of being the first company of its kind in Kenya.

Sadly, the company has nothing to brag about for now as it is facing liquidation for failing to pay its creditors.

The situation has put 600 jobs on the line, most of them university graduates who were employed on full time basis.

To add insult to injury, a social media platform discussion revealed that the company is notorious for failing to pay its workers.

An employee of a local call centre who spoke on condition of anonymity thinks that all call centres in the country have a habit of underpaying their workers.

“I cannot comment on Kencall but the company that I work for has the same habit,” he says.

He argues that, “one cannot expect to earn less than 10,000k per month with stressful and overwhelming working conditions and work to his full potential.”

Loise Achieng, a former employee at a government parastatal thinks that this is a difficult time for graduates who are completing school with the hope of getting a job.

“How would you feel graduating to get into the job market while companies are busy laying off their employees?” she poses.

“With more and more companies shutting down, it is going to become extremely difficult to secure another job,” she says.

“Most of these companies lack strong policies on management and leadership hence they are forced to shut down,” points Peter Wakaba, a Manager at a tours and travel company.

“Losing your job is one thing but losing it because of someone else’s failures is worse,” he opines adding that, “an employee working in such a company cannot fully perform to his maximum potential because of constant fear of being handed a termination letter.”

“My advice to all the employed is to live every day as if it is the last day of your employment and believing in God,” he advices.

“If I was an employee in the company, I would take this as a warning sign and start exploring for job opportunities elsewhere,” advices Nicholas Kibe who is a recent graduate at a Private University in the country.

“It is unfortunate that graduates put so much hope in such employers yet they end up disappointing them,” he says. add

“It is very important that the organization communicates openly with their employees so that they can have a chance to act,” he opines.

Emily Kanini, also a graduate who is currently looking for a job is of the opinion that job opportunities are available if you stay focused in it.

“The issue of KenCall as well as the shutting down of companies should not discourage job seekers. Companies have their own issues and job seekers need not despair,” she highlights.
