The Question That Makes Job Seekers Sound Stupid

Source: Linked in
When asking for any job openings, it is okay to ask a recruiting manager about any positions available and if you fit in.

However there is a question that you may ask which make the recruiter doubt your intelligence.

Do you know of any job opening?

Asking this question makes you sound stupid because you cannot clearly define your job description.

Why is this harmful? Not being able to communicate exactly what you want is not helping your contacts help you. You need to HELP people help you. If you don’t give them enough of the right information, they can’t help you and here is why.

1. A generalist is not interesting to anyone. People (companies) want specific problems solved, and being able to do “anything” is a red flag that indicates perhaps you can’t do anything well.

2. It sounds like you are desperate. “Anything, I just need to pay my bills!” Oh really? Are you looking for a career move, or something long-term? Are you always in a state of desperation that is, will you perform the role in a state of desperation, which indicates poor planning, lack of understanding what’s going on?

3. It sounds like you aren’t good at anything. If you can’t declare what your strengths or professional passions are, maybe you don’t have any.

4. You sound like you don’t have a job description.

Everyone needs to start somewhere. No one should be above those things. But if you are a project manager, then say that is what you are looking for. If you are a director, executive, analyst, etc, say that is what you are looking for. Know who you are and be okay to communicate it!

Even if you feel like there are no jobs open… let me know how I can help you to the right role!

You may be able to do just anything but being specific makes you sound you are mature enough in your specialized role.

So next time when you are looking for a job, be sure to sound more professional and specific.

Be prepared to share that knowledge with people who can help you and you will sound a lot smarter this way.
