CV Writing: How To Indicate Job Titles

By Jane Okoth,

“I have worked for a number of companies and I am a bit confused on listing my employment history. Kindly advice me if I am to include the name of the companies first or my job title,” writes Peninah Karemi in an email.

Speaking to Melody Mwendwa, a Career Advisor at Corporate Staffing Services, she says that there are specific ways to highlight your work history in a CV.

“Your job title should come first then the name of the company can follow,” she says.

“Indicating your title tells the employer who you are as a professional. It is always about you and your work experience,” she explains.

Ms Mwendwa also advises that your employment history should be in chronological order starting from the most recent and the most relevant one.

Does the name of the company you worked for in any way influence the decision of the HR?

“It is good to leverage the name of the company you worked for because it gives the employer a clear picture of your strengths,” she opines.

“As much as the name of your employer matters, the most important thing is your skills and experience,” she shares

“You do not need to shy away because you worked in a less famous company. It could be that your experiences and achievements are one of the best,” she adds.

Ms Mwendwa also points out that the key areas one must never forget to include in the employment section are your achievements.

She strongly suggests that, “When listing your working experience, state your duties and responsibilities then don’t forget to highlight your achievements because they are always crucial.”

“At the end of the day, it is your achievements that will set you apart from the rest as employers want and expect to see accomplishments and results,” she states.

Ms Mwendwa also argues that the important thing in the employment section is to prove your worth.

“The key is to provide your accomplishments and prove that you are the best qualified for that position,” she explains.

On her parting shot, Ms Mwendwa states that, “A CV is reference document that highlights how useful your skills and experience can be to the recruiter and the company.”

“If you want your CV to be considered, tailor it to suit the needs of your potential employer,” she concludes.
