How I Got A Job With Unilever, My Salary & Advice To Job Seekers

By Elizabeth Benu,

Unilever is one of the most successful companies and its prestige attracts a large number of candidates to apply for their vacancies.

Career Point Kenya caught up with a Sales Executive at the company and this is his experience so far:

How did you get the job at the company?
It was through networking. I had been their customer for a while and then one day I asked the manager who had then become my friend to inform me if a position came up. As I was sitting my last exam in college they called me for an opening.

What was the interview process like?
There was no interview. The manager recommended me and believed that I would perform so I automatically got the job but I had a lot to prove to other managers.

How would you describe the experience at Unilever?
The experience of working there is exciting. The bosses are good and if you make a mistake they are willing to listen before reacting. The work is also challenging but as you gain experience it gets easier.

What don’t you like about working here?
Some of the managers are proud and treat you in a very degrading manner if you make a mistake. This can be at times discouraging and has a negative effect on your performance.

With everybody loving to work here does it offer any training to its employees?
The company offers free training to employees after which certificates are given. Most of them last three weeks and are usually offered when new products, software and marketing strategies are introduced.

Would you recommend someone to start a career here?
Yes I would. This is because it is a company that gives you an opportunity to grow in your career. The more experience you gain the more salary you earn.

It is also an organization where skills matter than qualifications. I got an opportunity here with only a diploma.

What is the salary range for this position?
Currently my position earns between Kshs.18,000 to Kshs. 25,000 a month. There is also a standard monthly commission of between Kshs. 7,000 and Kshs. 10,000 and commissions on any promotions within the month. The more your experience the more commissions you earn.

What are the most challenging parts of your job?
Having to meet all the set monthly targets is challenging and sometimes very overwhelming.

Do you have any advice for the senior management?
I would advise them to increase the salary. They should also look at the capabilities of new employees and treat them accordingly.

What advice would you give to job seekers interested in working here?
It is a fast paced environment, so be aggressive and resilient because before you earn as much money as you expect it will take a while. The job seekers should also be independent and learn as much as possible on the job.
