Interview Answers To “How Has Your Degree Prepared You For Your Career?”

By Jane Okoth,

During interviews, there are tough interview questions that can catch you unaware and make the recruiter doubt your readiness for the job.

Having all the relevant information on your finger tips will present you as an informed candidate who is willing to undertake his duties well if offered a chance.

Among the tough interview questions that you may find on the interview is the recruiter who wants to know how you have managed to apply your educational qualification to meet the expectations of your new job.

Speaking to Everline Njoroge of Stoic Car Track, she states that is does not matter what you scored in school but how much skill you posses.

“You may have the best educational qualification background, but if you cannot explain how it may be of help in developing your career, you will not be considered,” she explains.

So how do you explain and fully convince your employer that you are fit for the job with your educational qualification?

Brian Krueger of college grad.com says that this is a broad question and one needs to answer it based on the experiences and lessons learned while in school.

“For starters, you need to focus on the behavioral examples in your educational background which specifically align to the competencies that are needed in your career,” he advises.

“A good example is “My education has focused on not only the learning the fundamentals, but also on the practical application based on the information learned within my different classes. For example, I played a lead role in a class project where we gathered and analyzed best practice data from this industry.

“Then go ahead and tell the panel about its results that are directly related to your career,” he adds.

“Focus on behavioral examples supporting the key competencies and skills for the specific job. Then also go ahead and ask if they would like to hear more examples,” he concludes.

Carlos Makau, a part-time Lecturer at a public university in Nakuru also weighs in on the matter saying that one has to explain how his education will be of benefit to the concerned job.

“It is important because most of the graduates who are still fresh from school have no understanding of how to apply it in their careers,” he says.

He further adds that this is one of the reasons for lack of understanding between recruiters and graduates who are still fresh from school.

Alison Doyle, a job searching expert at about careers states that it is also important to give answers that fit your personal experiences and background.

“Answer by stating that your experience in college not only prepared you for my career, but it also prepared you for life in general,” she says.

She also adds that “one should let the interviewer know how you gained more skills that were not taught in class through interactions with fellow students and lecturers.”
