So its end of year and most companies normally hold and end of year bash. This is the time to kick back and look back at the achievements you have made as a company. There will probably be food and few drinks to wind up. If not careful these parties can get out of hand. How do you ensure that you keep its professional at an office party?
How To Behave At The End Of Year Office Party
In as much as office parties are supposed to be social events, it still remains strictly business. This means that this is not the time to show your wild side. Leave that to your girlfriends and boys during the weekend.
1. Don’t pass out the invitation
Even if you don’t like it, just go. Not going will only do harm to your reputation. You can go for thirty minutes and then excuse yourself later. And on another note, if you decide to stay, it’s not okay to overstay your welcome.
2. Remain professional
Don’t take it as the right time to blow off some steam. Even though it’s an all white party, remain professional. These are the same colleague you will meet next year.
3. Keep your flirtatious side to yourself
Yes you are single at 29 and have been eying that guy next door or worse your boss. An office party is not the avenue to start flirting with colleagues or even your employer. It’s just sad!
4. Enjoy yourself
Your employer has gone to great lengths to pull off a party for his/her employees. You are there to enjoy. Don’t be a party pooper- the kind that just keeps to her/himself and doesn’t appear to enjoy anything going on around them.
5. It’s not a night club, dress well
Don’t pull of that night club dress for this particular event. The event still remains business and its not the time to dress up like you are going for a night out.
6. Don’t turn the party into a business meeting
If you want to come out as the office bore, then spend the entire time talking about business. You are not in the office. Reserve the business talk for next year when office opens.
7. Recognize the other people
If you are the kind of person who likes to only talk about yourself, then don’t. Recognize the other colleagues in the party and show interest in them this is the time to get to know that team from the other department way better.
8. Don’t get shamefully drunk
Yes, there will be drinks at the party. That doesn’t mean that you gag down every drink on the table and get super wasted. And oh yea, don’t feel the need to eat anything and everything on the table. You can always have as much food and drinks as you want after the party.
9. Take time to network
Most people overlook the benefits of an office party. This is the best time to create networks that can help you in your career. These are top management or colleagues from other departments. Let it not be just an eat and drink party for you.
10. Go easy on the plus ones
Most of the times, it’s just the employees at an office party. There is no room for a spouse or a friend. This is not the time to bring inappropriate people as your plus ones.
11. A thank you goes along way
You have had a good time and you have even made new friends. It’s only natural that at the end you thank the person who made everything possible and this would be your boss or the vent planner. This will make them feel appreciated and make next year’s one a greater party.
12. This is not the time to make demands
Don’t feel entitled to ask for an Uber from your boss to take you home. If they had not earlier communicated that transport will be provided, then make a point of arranging for your own transport back home.
An office party can be very fulfilling if handled the right way. You will even create good networks within who can influence your careers. At the same time it’s easy to destroy your reputation if you handle things the wrong way. The choice is yours! Enjoy!
