What Do I Do? My Sponsor Might Be My Next Boss

By Lilian Wamaitha

Unless you live in a cave, am sure you have a rough idea of this sponsor thing that has been engraved in our society. On that note getting a job isn’t easy nowadays especially if you have no meaningful experience. What happens though when you play hearts and fate?

Here is Becky’s Story

“I graduated with a degree in marketing back in 2014. Since then I haven’t been able to land a job in my area of specialization. The only jobs I have managed to get are insurance sales jobs where you are paid on commissions.

I come from a poor background with three siblings behind me who look up to me to provide for them. Our parents died when I was still in school and life has been as struggle for us.

It was while I was in one of the sales job that I met Stanley. He was in his mid fourties and showed interest in me. I saw in him the opportunity to be make my life better. Before long I was already in a relationship with him. I mean, he had everything, money, power and prestige.

I got so used to the kind of life he was giving me. He was catering for all my needs and those of my siblings.

After a few months a job I had applied for several months came through. It was a marketing job. My dreams were slowly coming true. I was asked to come in for an interview. You can’t imagine the joy I felt at that time. It was during the same week I was to have my interview, that Stanley requested me to visit him.

I thought I could kill two birds with one stone. I would attend the interview and then later on go visit him.

I went for the interview as intended. While in the waiting room, it was then that I noticed a familiar face. It was Stanley! I asked the receptionist who he was in the company and to my shock he was the head of the marketing department.

Well to cut the long story short I nailed the interview and is supposed to report to work next week. The problem is that I don’t know how to handle my relationship with him. He still doesn’t know that I am about to start working in the company and more so in his very own department.

How do I handle all this? I don’t want the relationship to jeopardize my career. I am afraid that if I break up with him, he might get me fired. I am confused. I have been longing to get a good job for so long”

What is your advice to Becky? What should she do about the predicament she is in?
