5 Salary Benefits Offered To UN Employees In Kenya

Most people want to work for international organisations such as the UN because of the good salaries afforded to employees, good working conditions and great benefits.

The basic salary for professional categories is based on whether you have dependants or not. Otherwise the pay is the same throughout the UN system.

For example entry level professionals i.e. (P1 – P3) earn a minimum of 37,000 USD per year, mid level professionals (P4 – P5) earn a minimum of 67,000 USD per annum while senior level professionals (D1 – D2) take home a minimum of 95,000 USD per year.

With this kind of salary scale it is not a wonder every job seeker dreams of working with the UN.

Other than the normal benefits like health insurance and retirement plans, the UN also offers other unique salary benefits to its employees.

Some of the salary benefits offered to UN employees in Kenya include

1. One of the salary benefits offered to UN employees is Housing Allowance

Kenyan employees are entitled to a housing allowance of around 10% of their pay.

2. Travel Allowance

This is for when you are either travelling for official business or when you are changing duty stations. For example if you are transferred from Kenya to another country.

3. Dependency Allowances is also one of the salary benefits offered to UN employees

One will receive this payment if they have a dependent spouse or children.

For one to receive a Dependent Spouse allowance, their spouse should not be earning more than what the lowest entry level general service employee at UN earns. You have to have documents that prove this as well if you are to receive this allowance.

In a case where the dependent is a child, the child must be under the age of 18 years; if over but under the age of 21 years, he/she must be in attendance at a school or university full-time.

As part of the salary benefits offered to UN employees under Dependency Allowances, one can also receive secondary dependent allowance.

This is can be your father, mother, brother or sister whom you provide financial support to. Your siblings’ eligibility is similar to that of the dependent child.

Secondary dependency allowance is not payable if you are already receiving dependent spouse allowance.

4. Hardship Allowance is also among the salary benefits offered to UN employees

Hardship allowance is given to someone who is working in a duty station with poor living conditions and there is a big difference in the culture. For example someone posted in north eastern is eligible for this.

5. Holidays and leave

Depending on your contract type, you are entitled to 18 to 30 days of vacation time every year.

Although it is deemed difficult to get employed by the United Nations, the process is clearly worth it when you think about all the benefits you will receive once you are an employee.
