I hate my job so much I don’t know what to do. Waking up is becoming a task, but I can’t quit because I have bills to pay. What should I do?
This is an email sent to me by Mr. Kimani asking for advice on how to cope with a job you hate.
Deloitte’s Shift Index survey shows that 80% of people are not satisfied with their jobs.
With the current rate of unemployment, it is no wonder this number is high. People are taking on jobs they do not want just so they can earn money and those trapped in jobs they hate will not quit or look for another job because of the same reason.
So how do you cope with a job you hate?
Here is a list of ways to cope with a job you hate.
1. Assess your situation.
You have already established that you are miserable and hate your job. But why is that?
Do you have any idea why you dislike your job so much? Is it your boss you don’t like? Does it have anything to do with being in the wrong field?
Questions like these are important as they help you figure out what exactly the problem is which, then gives you the ability to come up with a plan of action.
Sit down and try to figure out what it is about your job that you hate so much and then come up with a way to solve your problem.
2. Do not ignore your feelings
Pretending you are not miserable will not do anything other than postpone the inevitable. Continuing to ignore how you feel will only lead to more hatred in the future.
That is why you find people walking out of the office in the middle of work and never looking back.
Instead, after figuring out what the problem is and seeing that it is something that can be resolved by your boss, it is important that you have a discussion with him.

Yes, it is a good idea to rant about how much you hate your job but not to co-workers or on social media. This is obviously a bad idea because your boss might end up being informed of your ranting.
Psychologists believe that when one talks about their feelings they are then able to handle them better. So talk to a trusted friend and vent about how much you hate your job.
Complaining will not solve anything but it will leave you feeling a little better.
4. Change your attitude.
So you do not like your job and you always feel drained at the end of the day. However, a sour attitude does not make your life any easier.
In fact, having a negative attitude every day will only bring you down and make you hate your job even more. So try and be positive as difficult as that may be.
View your job as a chance to improve your skills and grow your career.

5. Start Looking for another job
This might seem difficult, especially in the current job market, but if nothing can be done about how you feel about your job, then it is better to just find another one.
There is no point in your suffering for years in a job you do not like or in an industry you don’t want to continue working. It will be much harder to change careers in your 40s and 50s.
Apply for jobs in an industry you feel you will enjoy working in because there is no point in you switching jobs only to end up hating the new job.
It is important to remember that when you are unhappy, your productivity at work will suffer. Therefore, it is important to ensure you love what you do. When you love your work, you will succeed at it.
