Want to Quit Your Job But Need the Money? Remember these 5 Things

You’ve probably thought about it. Maybe, even more, times than you would like. You hate your job, you feel stressed, you feel like it’s time to start a business and you have made a decision to quit your job. But you need the money. You know, if you hand in that resignation letter today, you are probably doomed.

It will only be a matter of time before you exhaust your savings (if you have any) and declare yourself broke. You will not have money for rent or food, taking road trips every other weekend, buying those nice shoes and clothes you come across or even buying presents for new babies. You know this and you are scared of what next.

If this is you, this post is here to speak to your worries. I will not tell you what you need to do or help you decide whether to quit or not. The decision on what you need to do is solely up to you.

5 Things to Remember If You Want To Quit Your Job but Need the Money

1.You Need to Come Up With A Plan For Paying Your Bills

Common sense demands that we take note of our problems or issues as they are. It also demands that we not exaggerate or ignore these problems, if we are to arrive at a positive outcome when finding a solution. The same is applicable when you want to quit your job, but need the money.

Ask yourself; how am I going to pay my utility bills? Will my current savings be enough to sustain me until I get another job or my business brings in money? Should I get a part-time job to cater for the bills as I work on my dreams?

Or alternatively, you can ask yourself this; can I move in back with my parents or crash at a friend’s, or siblings’ place as I sort out what I want to do?

Make sure you have at least one positive answer to these questions. It will be the start of your journey to making the coveted decision.

2. Identify What’s More Important for Your Career

Almost everyone wishes they could wake up from their desk and quit their job. Some think about it for the right reasons, others do it for all the wrong reasons. You need to evaluate the reasons you want to quit your job before you write that resignation letter. Otherwise, you might make a decision that will negatively affect your career goals.

For instance, if you want to quit your job because you are bored all the time, you hate your boss, your family or friends are pressuring you to do so or the work you do is too much, you may need to reevaluate your options. How about that specific job, do you like doing it? Is it the career path you want to advance in? If it is, you may find that all you need is to find new motivation or change companies.

But if quitting your job would give you a better start at going after what you really want for your career, then you are on the right track. All you have to do is do it right.

3. Know Exactly What You Want to Do Next

A lot of people only know they want to quit their jobs. If you asked them what they plan to do next, most will give you a vague idea or a blank look loaded with uncertainty. Do not become one of these people.

Fine, you need the money. But you cannot stay in a miserable job forever. You cannot also sit with your idea hoping to launch it someday. These are not habits of people who want to be successful. By identifying what’s more important for your career in step 2 above, you can then figure out what to do next.

Wanting to quit your job is the first step. The next one is to know, with certainty, what you need to do after quitting. You may not have a well laid out plan on how you are going to implement your idea, but ensure you know what you want. Otherwise, if you are still not sure what you want to do next, you may want to hold on to that job as you figure it out.

4. Gather Support From People You Trust With Your Life

Quitting your job and keeping it from the most trusted people in your life could be the worst thing you can ever do. You may be sure about what you want, but things don’t always turn out the way we envision. And when this happens, only the people that love you will come to your aid.

They may not support your decision at first, but if you are certain about what you want, convincing them should be easy. You may not even have to tell your entire family or friends list. One or two people, who you are sure can help you in bad times, will be enough.

By garnering this support, you will become more confident and certain about your quitting decision. It will also give you the motivation to follow that which you want as you will be afraid of disappointing them. Without support, you may find quitting a hard process and life after quitting even harder.

5. Ensure You Quit Your Job in a Respectful Manner

If at this point you have no doubt in your mind you need to quit, make sure you do it the right way. And by this, I mean you consult your contract on the terms and conditions of leaving. Don’t wake up one day and decide not to show up for work, or leave on Friday and not show up on Monday.

Instead, quit your job by resigning appropriately. Write a resignation letter and give notice.

Quitting a job when you need the money is not easy. It is a process that requires caution and extensive evaluation of outcomes. If you are struggling through this period, the 5 things should help you out.
