Jobs Of The Future: 6 Fantastic & Marketable Jobs To Try Out In 2017

By Susan Gitonga

As you are aware, very many companies are downsizing. Reason Being? Technology. This one word technology has affected the way we work and the kind of staff employers are looking for.

I recently came across an article that referred to Technology as the 4th Stage of Industrialization, and indeed it is.  According to a recent survey by Jumia Business Intelligence, the number of Kenyans who use the Internet in Kenya are 32 Million, which constitutes 67% of the Kenyan population.

What does this mean for the economy? Most companies are intensifying their activities and engagement online, because this is where majority of the people are, which manifests as business.

Traditional jobs are crowded and it is therefore upon you, to consider the not so crowded opportunities that are hidden in the world of technology.

6 Fantastic & Marketable Jobs in Kenya

1.Social media executive/manager

Top companies have embraced the importance of Social Media for marketing, Customer Service and PR activities. Safaricom is one such company that use social media extensively to engage with its customers.

As a point of advice, if you know you are a heavy user of social media, you should turn that energy and time you spend on the internet into a full time job as a social media executive/manager.

The beauty about a social media job is that it is still very new in the job market and there are not many qualifications required except a passion for social media, creativity and a keen eye on emerging trends in technology.

2. Content marketing/blogging

Businesses and companies are diversifying their marketing strategies by injecting internet tools to gain more customers increase business. The reason is attributed to the fact that all the consumers of a company are online and the internet has made it very easy for them to engage and promote their services and products.

That said, there is a need for content marketers in majority of the companies. These companies are looking for people who can help advertise and market their products online.

Better still, many people are opening their own blogs from the comfort of their homes and making money by posting regular and popular posts. You might want to consider a job in blogging if you enjoy researching and writing articles.

3.Web design

Under the web design umbrella, you can get opportunities in graphic design and website design. In a previous article, I had mentioned that Website designers in Kenya earn upto 40K for designing one website alone.

4. Big data analysts

Companies live on data to understand their business and their customers. This data can be sourced from various mediums including internet tools, surveys, and other data collection methods.

That said there’s a need for people who can analyze this data and come up with comprehensive reports which a company can use to come up with effective business strategies.

5. App developers

Drawing from the number of apps on your phone, you will agree with me that apps are useful. If you visit Google Play you will find over 2 Million apps there.

The catch in this is not how many apps you can be able to download. Instead, it is in the available opportunities that exist for you if you can create an app. If you have great coding skills you should consider a job as an app developer.

6. Uber drivers/ Mondo Drivers

Riding with an Uber is great, but getting a job as an Uber driver should be the focus if you are looking for a driver job.

If you have good driving skills, are honest, have a smartphone, have a car in good condition, and can use Google maps well, then you should consider enrolling on this service and getting your next job through your phone.

In closing, getting a job is generally not easy, but it is high time you considered a job in any of the above fields, before they become too crowded. The opportunities are there waiting for you, but are you there to take them?
