By Susan Gitonga

If you are like me, you have probably changed your dream career a thousand times. I remember my younger days when I wanted to be an air hostess, then that changed and all over sudden I wanted to be a lawyer because I thought I was very good at debating. Then I wanted to be a Journalist and really admired Lilian Muli and wanted to be like her.

I came close, I am in communication, and this is where I am today.

That’s just my own journey and I am sure you have your own journey as well.

Falling out of love with your job or career is very normal , and I’d like to share with you how you can make a successful career change without going back to school.

How To Make A Successful Career Change Without Going Back To School.

1. Start Figuring It Out

If your current job is draining the life out you and doesn’t seem like the perfect fit, you need to start figuring out what it is you can do and be fulfilled while doing it.

If you are just looking to change the job you have and take the next available one that comes, that’s only a job, and not a career.

Building a career takes a lot of focus, skill and calculation because of the very competitive market that already exists.

In order to figure out which career path you should take, you can do your research on the internet about a career that looks and sounds interesting to you.

Secondly, you can ask your friends and families to help you identify your unique gifts and talents.

2. Become a subject matter expert

If you want to change your career without going back to school, you will have to be an expert in the field you are interested in. That can include having a portfolio of your work.

If you would like to change your career from a Human Resource officer to a being a Farmer for example, you can start a really good farming project and sell your produce to local sellers. Having good farm produce can be a reflection that you are an expert in the field.

In whatever career path you set out to take, you must demonstrate a level of expertise in the area. That way, people will value your work and trust you.

3. Network with existing contacts

When deciding to change your career , you must be in communication with the right people. For example, if you know someone already working in the career you want to pursue, you should spend a lot of time with them. Learn from them, ask for advice and look for opportunities.

4. Be your own brand ambassador

You must become your number one fan, your top cheerleader and brand ambassador when looking to change your career.  When you believe in yourself, others will also believe in you.

5. Start a side hustle

Maybe you are tired of the 9-5 life and you would like to be your own boss. That’s a great idea to have and if that’s you, let me encourage you that your dreams are valid.

If you are still working your 9-5 job, you don’t have to quit immediately but you can start your side hustle and work on it until it can stand on its own and be able to provide enough income for you. Then, you can decide to quit your 9-5 job.

6. Give your CV a Make Over

Yesterday I talked to a lady who was looking to change her career from Banking to HR. With over 18 years experience in Banking, she was looking to refresh her CV for the new career path she wants to take.

That goes for you too. If you are looking to change your career, you need to freshen up your CV so that it can fit the jobs you will apply to in the future.

And that’s how you can move from one career to another without necessarily going to school.
