A Government Job Is More Likely To Stall Your Career

Being in a government job can be a walk in the park; ask anyone working there and they will surely confirm that to be true. Only a few will talk about having too much to do and these few are those who are keen to take initiative.

Most people will leave the office at 5.00 PM having done very little of their day’s work, they’ll even not understand that you have to work late nights at your job and if you are looking for a job, they’ll tell you to find one in the government. Why? Because you will be paid to sit around swinging your chair.

In a job seeker’s eyes, this can be enticing and a good opportunity where you can earn a living without having to stress on issues too much, especially because you are probably frustrated from not getting any jobs. It is, however, the one mistake you will want to avoid making.

Why A Government Job Is A Career Mistake You Should Avoid

You have at one time or the other been to a government office, either to get your national ID, Passport, NHIF card or any other document that is required of you by the state. For every office there is the good and the bad; good officials who will take their time to attend to you to satisfaction and the bad officials who will sit at their desk, make you queue for long hours, then tell you to come back another day.

“It is hard to come across a good official in the government, but when you meet one, remember to be grateful. I went to NSSF offices in Westlands and the guys there are very efficient. They don’t keep you waiting and if they see you having difficulty with your forms, they come to you,” says Martin Ouma.

Martin is however not pleased with NHIF officials in the Westlands office, “I walked in at around 3, filled my forms but was asked to go and come back another day because they were closed for the day.

The lady who dismissed me was at her desk chatting up her colleague, it was very disappointing.”

More often than not you have had to experience the laxity that comes with government offices, and being part of the team could impact negatively on you and your career as well.

In a place where services are done according to the book and follow a certain criterion or process, it is hard to become effective at your job, especially when the task requires you to liaise with others.

While you may want to be singled out and veer away from the general perception of government workers, others are bound to bring you down with them. If they decide they are going to perform a task that requires 5 minutes in 3 hours, then you get pulled into the ineffectiveness.

If you want to become a successful person in later days and enjoy being in your dream job, the government would not be the best place to start it of. You’ll hardly have anything to do, which means you will not encounter any challenges to toughen you up for later jobs and the world.

Being that creativity is almost nil in government jobs, you will have a hard time making informed decisions.
