Is It Okay To Return To Your Former Job?

By Susan Gitonga

I wish I never left my previous job. Despite the attractiveness of my new job, I am miserable here. Can I possibly go back to my previous job?” Says Kaingu Mwiri via email.

Are you unhappy at your new job? Thinking about returning to your previous job? You are not alone. The grass tends to be not so green once you jump over the fence.

According to Cynthia Wangeci a recruitment manager at Corporate Staffing Services, a leading recruitment firm that helps Kenyan professionals with free job placement, being nostalgic about an old job is common place.

“At some point, you need to re-evaluate and see where your career is headed”, he says.

It Matters How you Left

Under what circumstances did you leave your previous place of work? If it is under unfavorable conditions and you were fired, then returning might not be a good option for you.

However, if your former employer held you in high esteem and considered you an invaluable member of the team, you could return and probably get more benefits than before.

Everyone wants to grow their careers to be more than they ever thought possible. Putting this into consideration, you should probably go back to your previous job if it was offering you a better chance of growth than where you have transferred to.

Be realistic and realize that sometimes it is not about pride. If your goals are achieved better at a previous place of work,it would be better to swallow your pride, accept defeat and go back in humility.

Do not always put money ahead of everything else. Let your passion drive you to a job and you will achieve greater accomplishments than you ever thought possible. Choose to work where your efforts are appreciated and acknowledged.

Anytime you think about returning to a previous job, think on these things and make an informed decision. All decisions worth making are worth thinking about it.

Be practical and realistic.
