5 Things Interviewers Look For In An Interview But Don’t Tell You

Have you been to so many interviews only to get regret letters or no communication at all, even though you were qualified for the position? That could be because the interviewer is not only looking at your qualifications but how you act and behave during the interview.

Here are some of the things interviewers look at during interviews

1. Are You Actually Answering the Questions I Ask?

Interview preparation is important when it comes to ensuring your success. However, when it comes to answering questions it is important that you be in the moment.

Sometimes your rehearsed answers might not fit the questions asked and it is up to you to tweak it so that it does. Do not answer the question you think an interviewer wanted to ask but what they asked.

“Failing to answer the questions an interview means that at the end the interviewer would not have learnt what they needed and as such cannot recommend you for the job,” says Carolyne Kariuki a recruiter at Corporate Staffing Services.

2. Do You Have Reasonable Expectations?

As you speak to the interviewer they are looking to see if your expectations in terms of the working environment, progression and salary match what the organisation can deliver.

No employer wants to hire someone who they feel won’t be a good match for the position because they have unrealistic expectations. It is important to understand what the job offers, responsibilities and know a bit of the company culture so that you can know what they are looking for.

3. Are you high maintenance?

Employers don’t want to deal with a difficult employee so if you seem like you can be too high maintenance you will lose out on the opportunity.

You can do this by complaining frequently and having too many concerns in the first interview.

4. Are You Showing Me Your Real Self?

Interviewers are always checking to see if you are being honest with you answers or just saying what you think they want to hear.

This is where overly rehearsed answers can hurt your chances. Practicing what you will say is not wrong but you have to give the answers in the most natural way possible and make it look like you didn’t spend hours rehearsing.

Your mannerisms also need to reflect who you are for example if you do not have a twang it is important that you don’t suddenly develop one. You can get interview coaching services to help you master how to answer the questions well.

5. Would I Like to Work With You on a Daily Basis?

As unfair as it sound if an interviewer does not like you they will not shortlist you for the position no matter how qualified you are.

“We are looking at the human aspect as well and want to hire someone who will bring a positive energy to the workplace,” says Ms Kariuki. You need to show that you can be trusted and that you have good work ethics.

When it comes to interviews the trick is to be as natural as possible you need to allow your personality to show. Ensure you connect with your interviewer as it will help boost your chances for getting the job.
