Work Longer With Better Pay Or Work Less With Less Pay?

For some people this is a no-brainer because they love what they do and they don’t really find it tasking to work after hours. People want to work for multinationals because they pay well and have good benefits. However, most people don’t know that these companies expect you to work extra hours some people even work over 12 hours a day.

Now this will no doubt eat into your personal life which doesn’t offer you work life balance. Working long hours can lead to depression and anxiety as your body doesn’t get enough time to relax.

As a human being you need to let your body unwind which is why companies offer people leave days. Unlike machines we do need to take a break once in awhile.

How do you choose between having work life balance or not?

1. Age

Well for most people in their 20s to early 30s the most important thing is succeeding in their career. Definitely someone whose main focus is their career taking up more working hours for better pay is the way to go. At this age your body is also strong enough to handle the strain.

You should therefore take advantage of this time and work as much as you can before you decide to settle down.

2. Family

If you have a family you are less likely to want to work 14 hours a day. You may want to spend time with your children and therefore, will go for a job that offers better work life balance. This is because you now have a family to consider and it is no longer just about you and how much money you make.

However for some with increase in responsibility they might decide to work more in order to provide for their family. This however means you get to spend less time with them and you have to sacrifice your personal life for a career.

3. Financial Status

When one is struggling to make ends meet, getting a job that pays well is always a plus no matter how many hours you have to work. Having financial stability is usually the end goals and so one is more likely to sacrifice work life balance for it.

However, when they become more financially stable, some people want to cut down on their working hours to ensure they get more time to spend and enjoy the money they made.

4. Priorities

What is more important to you? Is it more money or more free time? Choosing between money and free time depends on your priorities. If you feel making money is more important at that particular time in your life then it makes more sense that you go after the money.

However priorities do change and no matter what decision you make you should allow yourself room for change.

All in all it depends on what you feel your priorities are and what your goals are. For some work is more important than anything else so they will chose the less free time version as opposed to the option of having better work life balance.
