7 Major Reasons Why Accounting Is Still A Great Career Choice

By Lilian Wamaitha
A few decades ago, accounting used to be the safest career. It not only assured you of a good job after school, but a good paycheck and the ability to climb the career ladder in a matter of a few years.
Fast forward today and the high number of accounting students coupled with technological advancements that threaten to automate all accounting functions, the question remains whether accounting is still a good career choice.
Well to answer this question, it is important that we look at all aspects of the situation.
Even with technology, accountants still play a critical role in the organization of dealing with data to help companies make big decisions, something that cannot easily be done without the human factor.
In this article, I will share 7 major reasons why accounting still remains a great career choice and why you should be looking for ways to advance as an accountant.
1. Accounting isn’t going away any time soon
One of the major concerns for anyone doing CPA or an accounting degree is that they won’t be able to find jobs anymore, at least not with so much competition.
However, there is still room for accountants. The fact that a majority of the jobs advertised are in accounting means that this is an evergreen profession.
If you know what you are doing and what you want for your career, you can still get a job. Of course, you will have to package yourself in a way that sells your unique skills to any employer making them want to see you for an interview.
2. Accounting stills pays well
Saturated or not, a career in accounting still pays well.
In most companies such as Banks and Investment firms, the starting salary for their CPA holders is 30-40K.
30-40K is a relatively big range, and it is all dependent on some factors that may include your level of Education and the work experience you have alongside your CPA.
3. There is a clear career path
If you study accounting you are going to be an accountant or finance professional. That is a fact.
Unlike other courses where the career path is not defined – I mean where you have to keep figuring out where you will work, in accounting it’s more of what type of company to work for.
Your duties are clearly defined whether you work for Safaricom or a startup as an accountant.
In short accounting is still accounting no matter where you work – an NGO or county government.
4. You can easily advance up the career ladder
Unlike other careers where you get stuck in the same position for years, accounting gives you the opportunity to advance up the career ladder quickly.
From an ordinary accountant you can advance to a financial analyst all the way to chief financial officer in a matter of years and you re-define your career the way you want to. [Advance Your Career Today With How To File Taxes Training & QuickBooks (Practical Accounting Skills) – Oct 2018]
5. Accounting has a lot of different fields
Besides advancing up the career ladder, accounting is one of the careers that gives you a whole range of options depending on what sparks your interest.
From internal auditing, management accounting to forensic accounting, you can advance your career in whatever direction that fits you.
And even later on in your career, it still easy to change your career as you gain more certifications and skills.
6. A career in accounting opens a lot of doors
Accounting is the backbone of every business and as an accountant you get to interact with a lot of people within and outside the organization.
As such, that kind of diversity allows you to easily move to another department and go for other important positions where your accounting skills will come in handy such as management roles.
