Are You A Supervisor? Why You Need To Motivate Your Employees

By Dorcas Karuana,
Having inspired and energized employees is essential for the success of any company/ business. In fact research shows that, “motivated employees increase heightened performance and productivity.”

However, one of the most difficult tasks that most employers face is in motivating their employees. If you want to motivate your employees, you have to make them feel excited to come to work every day, and to spend time with you and each other. So how do you do it?

Paying a decent salary or giving a raise can help meet your employees’ material needs so that they’ll be motivated to keep the paychecks coming. But money isn’t everything. “Intangible benefits, such as good working conditions and flexible hours, can also affect your employees’ attitudes and help motivate them to put forth extra time and effort,” explains Nelly Maina an employee at a blue chip insurance company.

Danson Wainaina, Operations Manager at Maxsmith Group agrees that, “treating your employees well can go a long way toward motivating them to do a great job.”

The biggest reason that you are going to want to have motivated employees is that “they are more productive to achieve optimal results, than employees who are unmotivated,” explains Mr. Wainaina. He points out that most companies have a set up of operations that are already in existence, but individual elements seem to be neglected.  Therefore, “you will find people work for money or because they do not have anything else to do.”

This he says is what the participants of an upcoming training on “Motivating for Results: Bringing Out the Best in People” will get to learn.

Explaining that the training targets Managers, supervisors, senior managers, project managers and team leaders, Mr. Wainaina says that “participants will cover the universal motivators and how you can use them to enhance performance as well as discover the real cost of poor productivity. “

He also stresses the need for bosses to adapt a leadership style that meet the needs of your staff–your organization–your working environment.

Further, Mr. Wainaina says companies are better off investing in such training, as the long term benefits will save you costs. He illustrates that “motivated employees are also a lot easier to retain than employees who lack motivation. It costs a lot of money to hire and train new employees so retaining staff is important for most companies.”  This is much easier if you have employees who really want to work there and are motivated to do their best work.

In conclusion, all companies want to have employees who are as productive as possible since that gets you more work done for less expense. Really the only way to make your employees more productive is to make sure that they are motivated to work harder.
