Meet Former Safaricom Marketer Who Found a Silver Lining In Hotel Industry

At 28 years, Yvonne Shasuvila has had the chance to work with big corporate companies such as Safaricom, Total Kenya and Bridge International Academies where she confesses to True Love magazine that, “I picked up skills such as communication, public relations and customer service, all of which have helped me in running my business.”

With a degree in business management from Kenya Methodist University and a Diploma in Public Relations Ms Shasuvila had another dream. “Owning and running my restaurant is a dream I have had for many years. I am finally fulfilling my dream.”

After dipping her feet in employment, she says that in 2013 she decided to quit or as she calls it, “seek new opportunity.’ “I believed that I had enough experience,” she says adding that the time was right to so, “I made it a reality in January 2014.”

She is today the proud owner of Grande Foods who main core is to promote healthy lifestyles. “We prepare healthy meals for all age groups.” The restaurant also offers delivery services in Nairobi at affordable prizes. “We also cater for business functions, birthday events and weddings.”

But wasn’t she scared of quitting her job to venture into the world of unknown? “I had my fears about starting my own business,” she says. She talks of how questions such as what if I am not ready? Do I have the skills needed; will I be able to pay rent as my business premises? “All of these questions ran through my mind, but I had the support of my family and friends, and I had God who always has my back, “she says.

Now, she reveals she is happy about the new direction her life has taken.”I enjoyed employment, but I must say that owning my business is bliss!” She says she gets to do what she has always wanted to do. “Plus I have more time to spend with my family, which has always been a huge need for me.”

With plans of increasing her skills level enough to train others on how to cook and live healthy conscious lifestyle she says she has really matured as a result of opening the business. “I value every single coin. I also love the fact that I have more time to spend with my family.” This time she says she spends it playing with her daughter, going to the movies with her husband, going to church, activities which the employed might not be able to enjoy.

Thinking of following in her footsteps? She advices that, “Starting a business can be risky venture, but if you have a solid plan and a great product, you’ll do just fine in today’s marketplace.

She shares some of the tips she lives by which are, write your goals down, focus on why you want to start a business in the first place. No more excuses, just do it. Do not be overwhelmed, take one step at a time and lastly, do not be afraid to ask others for help.”
