Revealed: Why Every Bank in Kenya Wants To Hire Martin Oduor Otieno

Mr Oduor Martin Otieno represents an established top find for any corporate organization. He first gained national prominence after former President Moi selected him together with Dr. Richard Leakey and Titus Naikuni as part of the Dream Team in 1999.

Their role then was to revamp Kenya’s economy and restore donor confidence in the country.

He went on to serve as the Permanent Secretary for Finance till 2001. However, with the Dream Team gone, his rise in the corporate world and specifically the banking industry continued picking up from where he had left off with an inspiring legacy making him a much sought-after technocrat.

Prior to joining the Dream Team, his chequered career had seen him work as Barclays Bank’s finance and planning director as well as regional director in South Africa. He rejoined Barclays after leaving government employment briefly till 2005before heading to Kenya Commercial Bank as the deputy CEO.

By 2007, he was already KCB’s CEO and his achievements include growing the bank’s branch network from 100 all the way to 230. And during his tenure, KCB profits rose to surpass those of his former employer Barclays which was by then the best performing in Kenya. More impressively, KCB also became the first local bank to span its operations in the entire East African Community bloc comprising of six countries.

Mr. Odour Otieno’s CV
Martin Oduor Otieno is an old boy of St. Peter’s Mumias School and Cardinal Otunga where he sat for his A levels. He later joined the University of Nairobi for a Bachelor of Commerce. Even then, he was already in demand by employers; working for Mumias Sugar Company, finance department while still studying.

He then embarked on a ten-year career at British American Tobacco. The 57-year-old also holds an MBA from Maastricht Business School and is a fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (ICPAK), Kenya Institute of Bankers (KIB) and is a member of the Certified Public Secretaries (CPSK).

Starting from 2013, the much sought-after Mr. Oduor Otieno has been serving as Delloite’s senior adviser in financial services. This followed his retirement from KCB. Among other organizations, he sits as the board member of the East African Breweries Limited (EABL).
