6 Killer Personal Brand Strategies To Make a Big Impact in Your Career- Dr. Chris Hart
Dr. Chris Hart, an accomplished Psychologist gives tips on Getting Ahead with Your Career by making an indelible impact on the people we interact with. Here’s one of his power-packed pieces of advice published in the May 2014 edition of True Love Magazine.
These days, being good at what you do doesn’t guarantee you success. To succeed, you have to make an impact—on everyone: your boss, colleagues, clients and even potential spouse!
People who make an impact on others tend to have one thing in common: they are comfortable in whom they are. They know exactly what they want to achieve in life, and are so passionate about their goals that people know they mean what they say.
Here are strategies worth adopting:
1. Becoming more self-aware and managing your emotions; choosing whether to express anger assertively, for example rather than being swept along by it. Calm people get as angry as everyone else, they just respond differently (they control their anger rather than let their anger control them.
2. Look Taller:
Research has shown that taller graduates get higher starting salaries, sales come easier to taller sales staff and taller women tend to be more professionally and socially successful. So take a long hard look at your height. Can you make yourself look taller? Yes you can, simply lift your chin, walk tall, think about your posture and the way you move, and project a sense of calm confidence as you walk.
3. Work on Your Greetings:
Some people squeeze too hard, trying to take control. A limp handshake may be okay in some cultures but mostly it implies you are weak or undecided and not connecting at all. Instead look into each other’s eyes, make sure your hands meet up right up to your thumbs, keep palms close, and shake firmly, neither too weak nor too strong.
This suggests you are expressive and open to new experiences.
4. Sharpen Your Dress Code:
Think about bow you dress. Know your profession’s dress code and aim to dress just 10% better than your pay grade. That way you’ll both fit in and yet stand out from the crowd.
5. Prepare Mini Chats:
Concentrate on how other people are feeling, because the more outwardly focused you become, the more confident you’ll feel, and the more closely people will identify with you. Not just colleagues, but clients and even your children.
Ask questions that convey your values and priorities. When you speak to people, focus on the message you want to leave them with. Their memory’s limited, so package your ideas into no more than three concepts, no matter how many words it takes to convince them.
6. Network Smartly:
This does not mean a huge contact list. It’s about finding the few key individuals who are in the right place to say ‘why don’t you consider…?’ when a position opens up. Keep in a regular face to face contact. Be useful to them – send them reference industry articles for example.
Because that’s what it’s all about getting people’s attention, and being remembered, so they put your name forth at the right time, or are inspired by your words. Now go make an impact!
