In a statement released by One Africa Media on the passing on of it’s co- founder Carey Eaton, which occurred yesterday morning (Thursday)it reads that , “Carey was intelligent and bold but wielded this gift with a humility that gave all around him the confidence to achieve more than they knew was possible….”
And Kenyans have continued to pour their condolences with Raphael Kelvin III writing on KTN’s Facebook Page: “This man has really helped me and my friends since 2006 to date. I still get daily mails on vacancies in my areas of specialty. RIP. Condolences to his family, friends and all who worked with him to make people like me get those small jobs around to the day I got a permanent one.”
Here are 10 things you may not know about the man who brought Kenyans, Cheki, BrighterMonday, BuyRentKenya and StayNow in Kenya.
1. According to his LinkedIn profile, he is the co-founder of One Africa Media, Africa’s largest online classifieds business. Key brands include Cheki, Jobberman in Nigeria, BrighterMonday, SafariNow, PrivateProperty and BuyRentKenya
2. He was on the boards of many companies and was well respected as a leader in the emerging online business sector where he also played a mentorship role to young technology entrepreneurs
3. Previously CIO of the Australian classified group SEEK, the #1 job websites in Australia, NZ, China, Brazil, Mexico & several South East Asian countries, Carey returned home to Kenya in 2011 to start Cheki.
4. In an article on capital FM news, Cheki started from humble beginnings and grew into Kenya’s number one car portal and the larger group of companies into Africa’s largest classified group. The Kenyan operation now includes over 150 people spread across the country. capital
5. He was a family man. Mr. Eaton now leaves behind his wife Steph, and 4 children Noah, ILola, Ted and Archie.
6. He attended hillcrest secondary school, got his Bachelors in Linguistics from the University of Sussex and a Masters in International Relations from Macquarie University.
7. Eaton is a 3rd generation Kenyan of Australian origin but has lived in Kenya for close to all his life.
8. According to the Africa Channel Blog, in June 2013, Seek, Australia’s largest recruitment portal, acquired a 25% stake in OAM (One Africa Media) for $20 million, valuing the company at $80 million
9. One Africa Media’s three major shareholders are Justin Clarke (co-founder), Carey Eaton (co-founder) and Tiger Global Management, a New York-based hedge fund.
10. One Africa Media operates Africa’s largest portfolio of online marketplaces focused on Jobs, Cars, Property and Travel serving markets with over 400 million Africans.
In conclusion, Mr. Eaton’s life was well lived. He was considered a high achiever by many and didn’t let anything stop him from realizing his dreams.
