Shock as Employees Get Salary A Month Later At The Ministry of Lands- Ngilu not Spared
How would you feel if every month you got your pay slip the actually salary would arrive a month later?
Well, that is what employees at the Ministry of Lands are being forced to deal with. Even Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu has not been spared.
Officials from Mrs. Ngilu office told The Daily Nation that they too were facing the same problem. “I received my April pay on May 26th, more than four weeks after I got my pay slip”, an official retorted. The delay seems to be affecting the entire ministry.
The norm has been that employees receive pay slips and the money is credited into their accounts a day or two later. The system was so smooth that some banks often credited money into the accounts early, certain that the government would release cash immediately.
On Thursday, The Public Service Commission (PSC) said the problem began in April because counties failed to remit money to the treasury as expected. “There were delays but the situation has been rectified”, said Prof. Margaret Kobia, the PSC Chairman.
Should you find yourself in a similar situation, Martin Githaiga, a HR Officer with Corporate Staffing Services advises employees to follow the proper recourse channels in your company.
“This could be done through one, asking the person in charge of your salary what the delay is. After all it is within your rights to ask for your salary.”
Two, you can choose to suspend your services. “This could be done through go-slows or not checking in at work.” Three, if there’s no genuine reason for the delay and you’ve tried all the available options, you could report the company to the NSSF (National Social Security Fund). They have a labour office which will track down the company and deal with them accordingly.
Let us know what you think about salary delays and what you would do if you found yourself in such a situation.
