Unemployed Civil Engineering Kenyan Graduate Gets Conned Sh123K on OLX
We are in era when everything is done through the internet. Whether you are job searching or buying merchandise worth thousands or millions, the internet is the way to go.
Mr. Antony Musembi, a recent graduate from the Washington State University was conned Sh. 123,000 after he posted his Microsoft video game player and other items for sale on the OLX Website.
The unemployed civil engineer stated that a Dr. Mwangi claiming to work at the Kenyatta National Hospital telephoned him saying that his was interested in buying the items for his young sons. The said doctor would then send a Mr. Kimeu, his Personal Assistant, to view the goods.
“We arranged to meet and after he viewed the items, we agreed on a price and he wrote me a bankers cheque for Sh. 123,000,”which the bank would later reject and inform him was a fake.
Mr. Musembi, who had just arrived a week before from the US, claimed that he accompanied Mr. Kimeu to the Cooperative Bank, City Hall Branch, where tellers assured him that the cheque was indeed a banker’s cheque.
However, two days later, the cheque, allegedly from the Gulf Bank, was returned with ‘suspected criminal activity’ as the reason for rejection. A Manager at the Cooperative Bank yesterday said the cheque, which was later discovered to be a personal one, appeared to have all the characteristics of a banker’s cheque.
Gulf Bank’s Operations Manager at Kenyatta Avenue Branch said he had no information about the matter.
