6 Foods To Stay Away From At All Costs Before Attending an Interview
You are what you eat as the old adage goes. I’m sure you’re wondering what on earth eating possibly has to do with going for interviews, right?
Well what you may not realize is that what you eat may have an impact on the outcome of the interview. So if you want to keep calm, focused and sharp on your toes. Here are the 6 foods you should avoid before an interview.
1.Caffeine
Avoid drinking caffeine before an interview to help prevent the ‘sweaty palm syndrome’. According to the Career Realism website, Caffeine is known to be anxiety inducing and can make you seem too chatty. Lay off the coffee before you head in for an interview. Instead, it might be best to have some green tea, since it has been shown to reduce levels of psychological stress
2. Onions, Garlic, and Spicy Aromatic Foods
It seems obvious, but you should never eat anything pungent before an interview. As delicious as aromatics like garlic, and onions are, they should be avoided for 24 hours before your big meeting. If you walk into a room smelling like garlic, the interviewer won’t notice your nice outfit, or your polished shoes, they won’t even notice your impressive resume. All they will notice is the overwhelming stench that you brought with you.
3. Beans,
According to the Excelle blog, these ingredients are known to cause flatulence. This simply means that they give you a bloated belly, which in turn can upset your stomach or worse give you gas. So avoid such until after the interview and I’m sure both you and your interviewer will be glad you did.
4. Too Much Water
It’s important to keep yourself hydrated, but don’t drink an entire bottle before the interview. The recruiter won’t appreciate it if you have to excuse yourself three times just to go to the bathroom. Plus you might end up coming off as unprofessional.
5. Greasy and Sugary Foods
Fatty and sugary foods will give you a surge of energy and then make you crash. Eating fast food before your interview may seem convenient and inexpensive, but you don’t want to smell like greasy fries or feel like napping during the interview.
Furthermore, you won’t impress anyone by handing the hiring manager a resume with grease stains from your salty fingertips. Rich foods full of creams and fats won’t help you either; you can’t answer questions with confidence if you feel like you’re suffering a food coma.
6. Chewing Gum
Technically it isn’t food but it is considered a food item. Nonetheless, while chewing gum is known to give you fresh minty breath and relieve stress in the process, it might actually give your recruiter a bad impression. Talking while chewing on your gum throughout your interview will make your interviewer more annoyed than anything. If you need to have fresh breath, use a quick breath freshener and if you’re nervous try a breathing exercise to calm you down.
In conclusion, people always tend to forget that even the little things matter in interviews. You could be the perfect candidate but your poor choice in food items could very well cost you the job. So next time before you open up your mouth to chomp down, at least make sure it’s not one of these foods.
