Confessions of A Fresh Graduate in The Journey Of Looking For Her DREAM Job
By Florence Mukunya,
Being a graduate is all a person looks forward to after spending years and years in campus working yourself tirelessly in odd hours reading and researching for your academics. The journey does not end there though in fact it’s just begun.
Casey Muthoni * heard it many times when people referred to searching for jobs being a career itself. But she did not know what it meant until she cleared campus and began job hunting.
“I was very proud of myself for clearing school without any referrals; I had being a focused student all through thus armed with a certificate in my right hand and an impressive curriculum vitae and cover letters on the other, I went out job hunting, little did I know that what was waiting for me was totally different with what I expected.”
The major problem I faced was expecting to hand pick the job I wanted. I had an expectation and I thought I knew what was best for me .Too many times, I applied for job positions which were so unrealistic and got frustrated because I was not getting interview requests. It’s important for graduates to realize that they need to gain the experience before they can call themselves the boss.
I also did not take lightly when I got an internship with a local publishing firm and was asked to serve tea to the seniors, being young and naïve I thought it was just a way of them showing me my ‘position’ in the organization. Off course this did not carry on for long but it was a deal breaker for me, I was in the verge of quitting but lucky for me I had a senior person advice me and I chose the exposure I was getting and forgot about the minor details.
Casey’s key advice to all graduates (and those preparing to graduate) is to seek work experience. This advice seems like common sense however gaining work experience can help you plan out your career and gain vital experience in competitive industries. When the time comes to apply for full time work, your work experience can be the difference in setting you apart from your competitors.
Cash also had a problem. ” As a fresh graduate and like many Kenyans I was not in the habit of saving, I found it hard to attend all of the few interviews I got invited to because some involved travelling far, and that meant money for fare. Sometimes I even argued that I was not assured of the job so why waste the little money I had saved for nothing?
Many fresh graduates have had it tough looking for jobs, cases of people being conned their little saved money in the promise of getting a very superior job are not new little do the victims know that for the person to get there you have to work from the bottom upwards. No one climbs a tree from the top.
For Casey it’s a little step at a time journey as she works through the temporary job she got not giving up hope of get the best job that is still clearly embedded on her mind but she does not regret what she has gone through as it has been a learning process.
