7 Pieces of Advice Every 20 Year Old Should Read To Have a Great Future
I was reading Ryan O’connell’s piece on what you’ll need to make it through your 20s it was such a wakening call. I couldn’t resist sharing with you some of these very wise thoughts.
He writes that;
1.Do not beating yourself up about a mistake you made.
You know that time when you refuse to smile and sit at the corner alone as you watch the world go by just because you failed getting that dream job? Well smile don’t dwell on it so much, yes it matters but it’s not the end of the road. Beating yourself up about a mistake you made is only going to make you more inclined to do it again. Just accept that it happened and move on.
2.Don’t burn bridges in your professional life.
Many young people think they have all the time to live and that whenever an employer does not meet what they expected they leave without notice and they just don’t care and move on to the next job and life continues. Well, Ryan’s advice is that “Don’t burn bridges in your professional life. You never know when you might need them later on.”
3.Advocate for yourself in both your work and personal life
It’s important that you advocate for yourself in both your work and personal life. No one’s going to care more about you than yourself.
4.Make sure to treat your parents with respect
“Always make sure to treat your parents with respect to make up for the years of trouble you put them through as an adolescent.” Ryan says. Actually I would like to add that treating them well is not a payment or a favour to them, but our culture demands that we respect our seniors no matter the treatment.
5.Some of the people in this world are parasites…
As a young person you are bound to meet many people in life, choose wisely, “some of the people in this world are parasites just looking to suck you dry.
Identify them and get them out of your life,”Ryan adds.
6.It doesn’t matter if you’re not currently where you want to be
Being young means you have a lot of energy and moving through life swiftly seems to be the goal, sometime you might despair just because life is not going as fast as you might want it to be. Ryan advice is that “It doesn’t matter if you’re not currently where you want to be in your life. What matters is that you’re actively trying to achieve your goals rather than getting defeated.”
7.Appreciate what it means to be young. As much as someone can anyway.
Well, it’s often said that the youth are too young to appreciate what they’ve got, and that may be true. That body and mind will not remain youthful and a fresh forever enjoy while you can before responsibilities and bills come knocking.
While you may be young now, fact is, you won’t always be 21 or 22 or even 30. Soon enough you will be clocking 40 and you can look back and smile on how well you spent your youth, because let’s face it, you can’t get back or you can look back and say something like “I wish I could back and do it differently.”
