Jeremy Awori is the current CEO of Barclays Bank Kenya. He is described by many as a self-assured world class banking expert and a high achiever.

And he does have an impressive CV with over 15 years with the standard chartered bank in Kenya, the United Arab Emirates and South Asia.

Here are 10 things you didn’t know about him.

1.In an interview with The Edition magazine, in regards to his management style he says “I see my role as the ‘Chief Enabling Officer’. I strive to create an environment where my colleagues, clients and business can thrive and achieve their ambitions”.

2. At one point in his younger life, he was considered the best swimmer in the country and flew out to represent Kenya in international swimming competitions. “Swimming also offered me the opportunity to travel around the world exposing me to different cultures.” he is quoted by The Edition.

3.He is a family man. He is married with three children. “I try to do my best. When I start working too much, they call me be back into line which is great,” he adds that “As a rule I make it a point of spending most weekends or spare time with my family and friends.”

4. He travels a lot mostly within East Africa and abroad, mostly for business and pleasure. “One thing I ultimately love about my job is that I can create my day, as long as time is utilized in a manner that will be beneficial to the success of Barclays,” he says.

5. After a lifetime of competing in sports, he still enjoys working out and keeping in shape. He says, “It helps to manage the stress.”

6. He considers the best decision he ever made in his life is “To work and travel as widely as I did. Moving out of my comfort zone allowed me to become adaptable; stop taking anything for granted; humbled me; and put me in a continuous learning environment.”

7. In his free time, he enjoys relaxing with his family and friends and does indulge in watching movies, sports and travelling

8. One of the things he loves about his job is that his schedule isn’t fixed “I can create my day, as long as time is utilized in a manner that will be beneficiary to the success of Barclays.”

9. According to his LinkedIn profile, he has won several accolades among them The Banker Magazine – Bank of the Year in Tanzania 2010, Euromoney – Best Bank in Tanzania 2011, The Banker magazine – Bank of the year in Tanzania 2011,EMEA Finance – Best foreign bank in Tanzania 2012.

10. He also holds a Bachelor of Science undergraduate degree in Pharmacy from Manchester University in the United Kingdom (1989-1991). He also completed his Masters in Business Administration from McGill University (1994-1996), Montreal Canada.

Fundamentally he says that life is all about people……  “and we have to enjoy and treasure those relationships and never take them for granted.”
