Masaku Sevens Aftermath: Do The Photos Affect The Youth in Their Job Search?

By Florence Mukunya,

Saturday, June 27 was Masaku Sevens rugby tournament day and somehow the game isn’t what people have been talking about but the racy photos doing rounds on line.

Even the NACADA chairman John Mututho is angered by the scenes of the famed masaku 7s.

“The youths got drunk and misbehaved, the lot even threatened to burn a church in the area,” he told People daily.

The question though is; should every Kenyan youth be judge according to the photos and the misbehaving that went viral regarding the masaku sevens? Does it affect today’s Kenyan youth in their job search?

Talking to Beth Wanjira, HR personnel at Corporate Staffing Services she feels that the photos should not pose a problem for Kenyan young people and they should not be judged according to the photos doing rounds.

“First of all what are the chances that the employers will see these photos, most of these people are very busy to be online and I also feel that being a party animal is not wrong so long as the candidate can prove that they can balance their social life and work life,” says Beth.

She adds that showing commitment to work is the very important whatever you do on your free time does not really matter.

What if your to- be employer saw your photos and on the very same Monday you are in his/her interview table, would you try defend yourself in regards to the photos?

“Absolutely not, not unless the way I spend my weekend affects my work I do not feel the need to defend myself.

But as you go out and indulge over the weekend also remember that you have an image to preserve.

“We all need to have fun on our weekends or to do whatever we do to unwind for the working week, but young people should learn to strike a balance between their social life and the job, know your priorities, you have work and people who depend on you at the end of the day and that’s what matters most, because in as much as you want to have fun you need the job to provide for you money to have fun,” advices Beth.

The next time you step out for that hyped gig remember that you have responsibilities and that your image matters too.

That aside, what’s you take on the racy photos doing rounds on line?
