Not Again! 600 Employees Set To Lose Their Jobs Through Retrenchment
With the current unemployment rate in Kenya, it’s hard to imagine where 600 people will go after they lose their jobs. In the past we have had controversial retrenchments such as that of the Kenya Airways that saw more than 700 employees go home.
Following suite are more than 600 workers at the Nzoia Sugar Company in a bid to boost efficiency and make the companies competitive ahead of expiry of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa sugar imports protection.
“A consultancy firm has been hired to carry out job evaluations in order to implement the retrenchment process even though finances are a hurdle in compensating the affected employees,” The Managing Director Saul Wasilwa is quoted by Business Daily
Retrenchment today has notably been on the increase companies endeavor to minimize costs and maximize profits. Involuntary job loss can be very devastating and most of the times it may leave a lot of job insecurity to the remaining staff since they are uncertain of their future in the company.
Martin Githaiga a HR Personnel at Corporate Staffing says that retrenchment is a legal way of reducing labour costs and eliminating redundant positions but he feels that as an employee you can avoid being on the chopping board. He says, “One can avoid retrenchment by ensuring they have relevant skills and becoming an asset to the company.”
