What Determines Your Salary Between Results & Job Title? HR Speaks Out
By Elizabeth Benu,
In the current job market it requires one to have more skills than their job title requires, reason being that companies are on a competitive era and are more interested in your input.
When looking for a job we always look at the salary.
How big the salary is will determine if you will apply for the position. Many people’s perception is that the senior the title, the more the money.
Truth is, nobody wants to move from one job to another if the pay is not good
Speaking to Milkah Mboche, a Recruitment Consultant with My Jobs Eye, she sheds some light on what exactly determines your salary.
“First of all we need to understand the difference between a result-oriented employee and a title oriented employee. A result one is ambitious, a go-getter who seizes every opportunity that comes knocking.
A title oriented one is the complete opposite and they are not team players. They do not know their value in the company and are not ambitious since they are not looking for their own career development,” says Milkah.
It would be confusing to understand how one can manage to have the results be hand in hand with the job title but Milkah says for this to happen one needs to understand the expectations of the position they have and then relate them to the goal and objectives of the company. This ensures that you perform to your best.
“What would be the consequences of working for the title and not fulfilling you job description?” I probe.
“The consequences are majorly stagnation in your career. You may be earning more money and yet you are going nowhere. Another consequence would be getting no promotions in your company which is very vital for someone who wants to rise up,” She says
If you are still wondering whether it is the job title or someone’s results that determine one’s salary, Milkah says that they both go hand in hand.
She however says that titles and salary do not necessarily go together in all companies. She gives an example of a Chief Accountant at a company who earns Shs. 300,000 and another who earns Shs. 80,000 in a different company.
“What matters more to an employer? Results or the title?” I enquire further.
“As an employer it would definitely be the results. It’s about making the company grow,” she answers.
She advices that as a job seeker it is not advisable to look for a job with a big title. “If your skills do not match the job description then it will be hard to land the job. If a junior accountant applies for a finance manager position they will not be shortlisted because they will not produce the results,” she quips
As her parting shot, she advices on how to show good results from your position.
“It is advisable to perform to and beyond your standards but most importantly to understand your individual contribution to the company. Do your work with impact.”
With this information brought to light, What do you think brings home the fat cheque, the job title or your hard work?
