#NeymarWhileYouWereAway Trends. 2 Lessons To Learn From Brazil vs Germany Game
By Tabitha Makumi,
It’s one of those attention-grabbing football themed adverts we have seen this season. You know the one I am talking about where you have different kinds of football fans categorized into -The Worriers, The Diehards, The Clueless, The Show Offs and The Admirers.
Whichever category you fall into, whether you are the clueless fan who wouldn’t know what an off side was if it stared you right in the face or you are the diehard aficionado who would do nothing else but concentrate on the game, you will agree that the thrashing of Brazil by Germany is something that the world will be talking about for a long time to come.
But who knew there were some lessons we could all learn from this brutal match which shamed the Brazilians in their own backyard so to speak?
Mathew Kittany* a web developer with an IT firm in Nairobi says that he was rooting for Brazil since the world cup began back in June but on Tuesday night, he thought he was having a mini heart attack as he watched his team get brutalized goal after goal after goal… by the “Die Mannschaft” (“The Team”)
“But I have also learnt an important career lesson from all this, confesses Mr Kittany. He says, “I am sure you’ve seen the sobering comment dictating that, “Brazil has Neymar, Argentina has Messi, Portugal has Ronaldo but Germany has a team!!”
He advises that, “I think following the Germans is the way to go from now on. Even at the workplace and in my career, I will strive not to wait or rely on a single person.”
He adds that it’s dangerous to do so and says working as a team and trying to learn from the best (The single person) makes more sense now. “What if this person you so much rely on decides to quit their job the following day? Does it mean nothing will go on for that particular day?” poses Mr Kitanny.
For Martha Chepkwony a receptionist who spends her evenings glued to the screen watching her favourite teams battle it out in Brazil she says,
“It was a humbling experience for Brazil fans considering that a lot of people had pegged their hopes on them.”
Did she learn anything from the humiliating encounter? “First off, I wouldn’t use the term humiliating to describe what ‘we’ went through. C’mon we got this far!” she argues adding that, “I learnt that, even if you are on the winning side, you don’t stop for anyone, you keep on winning and winning some more. The Germans didn’t stop at 3 goals, they went on to 7 goals making ‘us’ the joke of the day if not years to come.”
For Ms Chepkwony, she feels that winners keep on winning and they never become comfortable with their current situation.
She adds that, “I think Brazil players at the back of their mind thought they had ‘it’, that they couldn’t lose at home leave alone to so many goals. They got relaxed and you can see what happened. My bottom line, never be too comfortable with what you have and always expect the unexpected.”
What about you what lessons did you take from the Brazil vs Germany game
