New ‘Career Trends’: 7 Ways Socialites in Kenya Use To Thrive & Perfect Their Art

By Florence Mukunya,

Recently somebody asked whether I would consider a career as a socialite, and my quick answer was is that really a career which was followed by a very stern no and never in a million years. And the other guy, (let’s call him Ben) asked, “Why not? They seem to be making a lot of money……”  Let’s just say it was not a conversation you would like your mother to listen to.

By the time I gave my response the only thing I could think of who cares about money if my morals will go down the drain.

But you will have to agree that the interest of becoming a socialite nowadays is alarming and it seems to be (for lack of better words) the ‘new job in the block’. From what we gather mainly from watching these socialites on TV , the career does pay

In fact in a recent interview on The Trend with Larry Madowo, socialite Vera Sidika confessed to making millions.

For example when you are looking for an accounts job, you go through the job description seeking to know whether you are a qualified candidate, one goes through the education qualifications and finally the years of experience needed for the job ,its then that you decide to apply or not to in reference to the information given.

My question today is, is being a socialite a career? What is the job description and what is the qualification needed for the job? After all the likes of Vera, Risper and Corazon ‘seem’ to thriving in this ‘business’

I talked to some random people and most thought to become a socialite you only needed a big posterior, a very light complexion and expensive synthetic hair but according to a little research, there is more than that to becoming a socialite.

While you may need a CPA (K) or  ACCA for an accountant job, here is what you need to ‘succeed’ as a socialite in Kenya

1. Pretend you come from a rich background
You have probably noted that most of these socialites come from a ‘rich background’; well if you are not from rich backgrounds don’t talk about it in the public. Why? because a lot of Kenyans love’ successful’ people…period

2.Should know how to promote yourself.
Wondering why Vera, Corazon and Huddah keep coming back to the social media even after being hated on so much and made fun of on Social media? well it’s because they have to keep promoting their image .

2. Find someone very rich to date.
This is self explanatory; you need money to look good, the glamorous outfits and the most exclusive synthetic hair don’t come cheap. And how you can afford this? obviously by marrying/ dating a rich tycoon like Vera Sidika and her Nigerian oil tycoon.

3. Be Ignorant
The more ignorant you are, the better. As a socialite you  don’t have to know the most basic things including the name of your president, your governors/ senators and off course the latest happenings nationally and internationally. Shallow tweets will get you the attention you are so much craving for.

4. Choose a catchy name.
In case you have been wondering on the names our socialites have chosen; there is a reason behind all that.  So before you decide you get into the business make sure the name sounds unique, something people can remember.

5. Become interested in expensive stuff.
Heck, Vera Sidika’s expensive weave and the shoes are just part of her CV. Socialites are supposed to know all the big names in everything including fashion, art, crafts, cuisine and sports. When someone asks you who you are wearing you should say something like “Vera Wang” or “Marc Jacobs” without flinching

6. Attract controversy and scandals as much as possible.
Strive to keep your image as stained as possible, use sex tapes, drugs, controversial divorces and public breakdowns to maintain your relevance in the social media.

7. Learn to deal with malicious gossip.
As you might have already learned, Kenyans on Social media are the most unforgiving people, once you decide to become a socialite you must learn to deal with all the gossip without a fuss. For example when Kenyans hate on you respond by posting a very revealing photo of yourself and act like you just don’t care.

Now that you know what it takes to be a socialite would you consider being one?
