Did You See Her Hair? What Type Of Hairdo Is ‘Official’ & What’s Not?

By Florence Mukunya,

Have you had a look at, Chantal Biya, Cameroon first lady’s hair? She was turning heads at the African Summit. Her hair demands attention. With that type of hairdo, you do not have to be a celebrity to get people’s attention. Which brings me to my question today, what type of hairdo is considered corporate and what’s not?

Speaking to various Kenyans, this is what they had to say.

Carol Kendi an accountant in a Westlands  is of the opinion that one should maintain a corporate image, just like in the dressing; the hair should look the part.

“I recommend short clean kept hair like the Kenyan and Ugandan first lady and also Lupita Nyong’o’s. I feel that these ladies are able to get attention for the right reasons; not because of big expensive weaves,” says Ms Kendi

She adds that, “Not all people can pull a short hair look so I would say go for the look that matches your particular field, a good example is lawyers and dreadlocks, and it’s not possible to practice with such kind of hairdo.”

Ms Kendi says that the bottom line is that the kind of hairdo you decide to put on depends on the job; go as crazy as you want if you work in the entertainment field or the media industry.

Paul Ouma a senior level manager in a firm in industrial area says that, “Ladies should avoid old wigs and weaves in the office. If put, maintain them or buy good quality ones. Also go for laid back colors”

He adds that, “For the guys I always advice a short or bald look, this are easy to maintain and they look corporate. If you want to be taken seriously start with how your head looks, it’s the first thing people see when you are having a conversation.

Sarah Mwaniki who works as a reception in a consultancy firm in Westlands has a problem with ladies who wear very large and colored weaves.

“I feel like such people were preparing to attend a disco and then mistakenly came to work,” Ms. Mwaniki says

She adds that, “I prefer short weaves or just natural or relaxed hair held neatly behind, it avoids unnecessary attention.”

Wanja Njuki says that, “Big colorful weaves are not corporate at all.”

She adds that, “I work in a law firm and if one day I decide to come to work like that I am sure I will not be received well, besides I feel that my clients will not take me seriously. I would say leave the colored hair to entertainers, it makes them relevant.”

Mercy Indombo works in a milk production firm, she says she prefers her hair simple and plaited backwards.

“For us, we have to put on the protective caps, simple plaited hair makes it easy for me to wear the cap. And even for people in other careers I would advice a simple to maintain hairdo as long as it’s clean,” adds Ms Indombo

According to these reactions, no type of hair is bad so long as you wear it to the right job industry.
