By Tabitha Makumi,

Standard Chartered remains to be one of the reputable banks we have in Kenya today and just to quench our thirst and satisfy your curiosity on what’s it’s like to work with the esteemed bank, Career Point Kenya spoke to a former employee on her experience as a SENIOR SALES REPRESENTATIVE.

1. How did you get the job?
A friend of mine who used to work in the client service department told me about the sales executive opportunity which the bank was introducing. I was fresh out of Kenya Institute of Management with a diploma in Business Management.

2. How was the interview process?
My first interview was a written one which was more of an exam testing on IQ and gauging my knowledge on bank products. After two weeks I went in for the second interview (panel of 2) where I was asked questions on my background, education, my aspirations, where I saw myself in five years etc.

3. What kind of work environment does Standard Chartered offer?
It was a good environment with helpful workmates across all levels of management. There was also a lot of high pressure especially in sales and marketing

4. Which branch were you stationed in?
International Life House and later Harambee Avenue

5. What challenges did you face while working there?
One, it was it was hard to get time off to complete my education. And two being in sales for such a renowned bank came with a lot of pressure.

6. Which opportunities did the bank open for you?
After 6 months of working as a sales executive, I got promoted to become a senior sales representative

7. What did you enjoy the most while working with bank?
For starters I had a great manager. Two, I enjoyed their constant world class training. You can never, never! compare it with any other organization. Lastly, they were very prompt in paying the salaries. You could get paid at noon, use 2-3 minutes to walk to an ATM and the money would already be in your account (laughs)

8. Speaking of salaries how much do people in your former position earn?
With good sales, it could go to even six figures. One thing I can say is that Standard Chartered has a very good salary structure.

9. Would you be willing to work with the bank again?
Yes but unfortunately not in the sales department. It needs a lot of energy and I am not as young as I used to be.

10. Would you recommend anyone to work with the bank?
Yes I would. As far as advice goes, if you are looking to join the sales department, be ready for the challenge, it’s not a breeze.

11. What’s your advice/message to the senior management at the bank?
Once you see good sales people retain them fast and let them grow in other areas. If they are good at their job, you should hurry up and retain them.
