By Elizabeth Benu,

You probably have the passion but what else do you need to be best fit in the advertising industry?

For starters, advertising is meant to inform, persuade, compete and entertain an audience. You have probably encountered an advertisement that failed to persuade you or drive the message home and I think if you were the one responsible you would not want a failed advert.

Milkah Mboche, a recruitment consultant at My Jobs Eye, says that one of the qualities/ skills one needs to survive in the advertising industry is the technical skills for design and layout if one is to join the design or printing team

“Another important skill is aggressiveness; job seekers have to understand that this is a competitive industry. They should also have ability to spot opportunities and also be flexible in terms of salary since it can pay on a commission basis. These coupled up with sales skills will see you survive in this industry,” she adds.

The academic qualifications to get you in this industry may include a degree/ diploma/higher diploma in Public Relations, marketing, Advertising and Public Relations, Public Relations and Creative Advertising, graphic design, Communication, IT or industrial design

If you are wondering whether one must have a degree to fit in this industry Ms. Mboche says, “In this industry it depends on the line you are in. Skills and educational background are needed but it does not really matter if you have either a degree or diploma; both options can work for you.”

This industry can see one hold various titles including: an account manager/ director to oversee the entire advertising process; one can also be in the creative team as an art director or copy writer or graphic designer where you come up with ideas and turn them into advertisements; television and radio production; the media or they can even chose to become a web designer/developer or online producers.

Companies that hire in this industry include media houses, printing and branding companies, research institutions, NGOs, advertising agencies, PR firms, recruitment agencies and government institutions.

Examples of such companies include Professional Marketing Services Group, Gina Din Corporate Communications, Silver Bird Company, Hanningtone Gaya Company, Magnate Ventures, Uniliver, Ogilvy, The United Nations just to mention a few.

As for the salary ranges Caroline Wanja at Global Careers Company says it can range between kshs.25, 000 to kshs.250, 000.

“Be open minded. It is not an industry with normal expectations since it is an ever changing one,” Ms. Mboche advices graduates looking to enter this industry.
