MCA’s Ask For ‘Loneliness Allowance’. What Jobless Kenyans Think Of This

By Florence Mukunya,

Every waking day we are faced with the hard reality of job scarcity in our Kenyan job market and even sadder, the struggle Kenyans go through to earn a living.

“I have been out looking for a job for two years, the closest I have gotten to a job is an internship that lasted six months. I have being odd jobs to make ends meet. Among the jobs include running errands for people including babysitting just to get something to sustain myself.”

I recently overheard this conversation in a matatu as I was headed for work.

It suddenly struck me how graduates struggle trying to make ends meet in these hard economic times yet recently I saw an article where some members of county assembly proudly demanded an allowance for their lonely wives.

In the article, the Runyenjes Central ward Rep Steve “Simba” Munene is quoted saying, “The welfare of MCAs must be looked into if devolution is to succeed. Give our spouses some allowances as compensation for all the time their husbands are away. They spend a lot of time lonely.”

Does such a thing even exist?

Well, as a struggling job seeker what comes to mind when you see such a declaration in public? I pose the question to a few people.

“It angers me, I would rather the money is used to come up with more projects that will employ more youths,” says Rose Mahugu an IT graduate looking for a job

“Are these people serious?” posses Paul Manyanja

He adds that, “The government should also pay me for the frustrations and the daily tarmacking I have been doing looking for a job. This is very unfair, their demands should not be listened to.”

“The MCAs are very insensitive to the common Kenyan out there genuinely trying to make ends meet, he works hard only for him to be taxed to pay for such allowances, it’s an insult ,” say a very angry James Kioko

Here is a look at some online reactions to the MCA’s lonely wives allowances.

Kirobwe: Wives allowances for MCAs. No way. This is greed and theft of tax payers’ money. Kenya is a poor country and needs more services to wananchi. MCAs stop your greed and focus on serving the voters. Else, after your term, you will be kicked out so fast.

Ben Karani: The worst part is that they are giving teachers, doctors etc all ideas…. bring on the next round of strikes.

Moseh Chacha: Are MCAs really serious with life? Money is in business not in allowances…open for them mboga kiosks…in fact the referendum should abolishing county assemblies.

Ruth: All these people are out to EAT! But, who can blame them? The House and Senate eat big, so, why not them? Taxpayer’s money is used to pay ghost companies and ghost workers, so why not pay the MCAS, their wives, and the Governors’ wives? Heck let the Govt. pay all the lonely wives and children in Kenya.

As a hard working individual trying your best to make ends meet, what is your take on the MCA’s demands?
